Its going to cost alot more than 2 or 3 bills.

With the timing belt costing us $400+, the Head Gasket is going to be alot more than that. Yes it is more cost effective to DYI the headgasket. I'm a @ home Dad that does part time mechanics for extra cash at home and I make 2 to 3 bills on the headgasket free and clear profit. My charge is I find 3 estimates average them deduct the total cost of parts devide the remaining balance and thats my charge for a job.

Heck I did a toyota camry once and made $600 profit because the going rate for that headgasket was $1200.
My suggestion is if you can turn a wrench DYI. or find someone like me.
    Hope this helps, LOL

If you're going to have a shop do it, just get a new engine. It's the same price.

    Nope, new engine is more.

A new engine is going to cost about $2000+, just because our cars are older does not mean that the repair cost is going to lessen this is why people just go and buy newer rides. They just can't justify the repair cost on an older vehicle this is why the junkyards are becoming more acustom to getting 3rd gen accords and insurance companies are just totaling not repairing.
But this also gives us the opportunity to ravage the J/Ys to keep our repair/upgrade cost down.
    Hope this helps, LOL

you can get headgasket set on ebay for $55.
take the head to a mashine shop for inspection, that shouldn't be much. $100-200 if you have to shave it. you can do it yourself for under $300.
