how bad is it to red line?

well i personally have never hit the red line before, i always keep it about .5k before it even if im racing. is it that bad to hit it or exceed it i have always been scared of the red line personally!

exceed redline and you end up with Valve float and more than likely your HP and torque curve plateau's. It gets to the point that you actually just slow down since more than likely your only running a stock duration camshaft. Also with higher mileage your valve springs wont control the valve as well as a new set of valve springs.

Nothing to laugh at when you lose a valve keeper and your valve contacts the pistons. Bent valve is no laughing matter.

i believe 5500, 5200 is a constant used for calculating....or...its where the hp and tq are supposed to cross.......or something funny like that. sorry my memory sucks at 3am.

I took my Accord to redline a few times, didn't seem to do anything.

I take my 92 SHO to redline almost daily, its a blast taking it up to 7300 shifting and ripping the tires open :cool2: Been doing this for 20k miles I've had it, no problems. Has 162k on it now.

the point of shifting after red line is so that you drop to a point closer or on the peak horse power in the next gear. i don't think it does too much other then the valve float peeps were talking about before if you go past redline. its just a shift at this point if you don't want to blow your engine spot.

i shift at 6500, and the revs shoot to 7g's and then back to 5700ish and it pulls strong after that... i keep my foot on the gas when shifting from 1st to second,,, shifting takes my about .3 seconds

Better yet get some better gears and/or tranny so you can stay in the sweet zone without buzzing it as hard

ha, i can hardly drive hard at all in the accord. last time i was auto crossing, my dad was driving and messed up on the 1st -2nd shift, it wasn't all the way in gear, so it grinded really hard and bent a syncro maybe (gotta get it checked out), so i've got to shift before like 3.5K (which is fine for normal driving) to keep it from making strange noises.

i take my car way up past 5k daily, and to redline every couple of days.

my car has 250,000mi and was driven agressivly by my dad before me..
although his personal reline for the 3g was 5000rpm, he went up there often.

i figure once this motor goes i will just get another one, so i might as well enjoy it.

syncros line up your gears for you when you shift up or down in a MANUAL car. in a non syncro car (mostly big trucks or old cars), you've gotta put the car in neutral, let the clutch out, put the clutch back in, then put it in the next gear when ever you shift. its a real pain in the ass and slows you down (dispite what F&F say). i'm at the point where i have to do that sometimes going from 1st to 2nd.

you can powershift, thats ok, but if youre carbed keep it lower than 7-7250, after that your begging for trouble. EFI guys dont worry about it.. the rev limiter should intervene at 6800 or so. Ive taken carbed engines to 7850 rpm and i overreved my 95 accord to 8k and have also taken an integra to well over 9k but those were on missed shifts...

because the carb will keep on climbing, there's no limiter like on the EFI models

6 k seemed to be the peak, anymore then that and its worthless IMO

yea there is generally no point to shift higher then about 6k or 6200... peak power is like 5500 or so and shifting 500 rpm past peak power is a good practice so there you go.
