    umm sure.
55mph is where you get the max efficiency in 4th gear.

its just a referance point cause the max speedlimit on most roads is 55. theres something like that on all the cars we own too, so its not just a 3g thing.

i think in the late 80s when our cars were produced the speed limit on any US road was 55MPH (so why not have that marked on the spedomter!?) of course it has changed since then... i have personally never seen one but i have read in the various manuals that there can be some sort of speed alarm buzzer wired to the spedometer that buzzes when you get over 55

No, that's the minimum you can do when driving on the highway. This is a old person reminder not to drive to slow on the highway.

Here, we have speedlimits of 75mph. It's pretty nice. But I think that 55mph is just a cautionary saying "don't do over this, it could result in a ticket" type deal.

OK.This might be hard to believe but most cars from the same era and prior to that ALL have 55mph highlighted because that used to be the nationwide speed limit. There were slogns like "drive 55 and stay alive" "55 saves lives" and so on.If u ever watched CHIPS u will see these on the cruisers bumpers. The DOT pushed to have the 55 thing on the speedo's as a reminder of the safe speed limit. In the late 70's the fuel crisis also helped the whole 55 mph thing cuz the auto industry said that was the safest and most fuel efficient speed.cars were crash tested at 55 and what not.Anyway...that whole thing went away some time in the late 80's and early 90's.

You speed limit guys are correct. The other reason was for maximum fuel economy, never pass the 55mph threshhold...
