Really wierd carb problem(need some suggestions)

ok, my friend has an 87 accord dx. His problem is that his car runs fine, doesnt bogg out, nothing. But when his gas runs lower than 1/2 tank, as soon as it touches the 1/2 tank mark, it turns off. Someone told him that his carb is bad but I dont think so because it runs good while it has a full tank. It runs perfectly actually. Soo. What can u 3g specialists suggest.

When it does turn off it runs really crappy, like if no gas was getting to the motor.

    hmm i have a few questions . . . .
allright, how much does it take to fill it, like price wise and how many gallon's does it take to fill it?
so once it reaches the 1/2 mark it just shut's off, i mean you could be driving and as soon as it reaches the 1/2 mark boom, the engine cut's off?

but thier could be a few thing's.
okay when it does do that (it's best if you have a spare gas container), pull over take off the air box (2 nut, plus the one's on the valve cover).
then on the driver side thiers a glass, of the float bowl, where you can see the level of the gas, it's gotta be 1/2 or a lil' above.
also you can dissconnect the fuel line going to the carb( put the line in a container so gas won't spill), then have your friend crank the car, if no gas comes out.

the fuel filter could be bad (thier's 3 of em', i say the one that's by the tank is bad).
the fuel sender could be bad, indicating that it has 1/2 tank but could be on E, in all actuality.
or someone messed with the gauge, it like once you move the gas gauge it'll stay in that position.

    hopes this help's.

If you actually have half a tank of gas left in the car when it just up and dies, it might be a problem with one of the lines coming out of the tank. I know on some cars there are two lines - one that works until the tank is half empty and one that works from half a tank to fully empty. I don't know if our Hondas are like this. Maybe it's a problem with the half a tank to fully empty one?

ehh, you mean two separate line's.
    i don't think so . . . .
    it's one line that's a fuel line, then thier something like a two way valve . . .. .
i have to read up on that.

The carb models have 2 fuel lines. The feed line goes from the tank to the carb. The other line is the vapor line. It goes from the charcoal canister back to the tank and just sends fuel vapor to the tank.
No projects. Life consumes my time and money.

Could be a bad fuel gauge or floater in the tank giving a false reading.

    A bad fuel pick up

    or bad fuel pump

ok, he says that as soon a it hits 1/2 way mark and it just turns off. He fills the tank back up with like $11. And it rides perfectly.

Ok theres another thing, I checked the fuel filter in the engine bay and it was really bad. It looked like it was the stock fuel filter. I even saw signs off rust inside the fuel filter because i cut it in 1/2 to see what it looked like.

And what ur saying is that there are 2 more fuel filters. That might be the problem then because if the one in the engine bay was bad the those have to be even worse. How hard is it to get to those fuel filters that are remaining. Where are they located.

Do u guys think that by changing them, the problem will go away.

hmmmm, homey you said that $11, that's around how much i or nearly any member would fill.

i say check that fuel sender unit. . .
$11 is nearly a full tank, so either the gauge is bad or the sender . . . . .i'm more on the sender.

the other 2 filter's one is on the driver side between the tank and rear wheel well, it has red fuel line leaving from the tank, into the filter then out of the tank to the engine bay.
the other filter is located within the carb. fuel float screw, i say dissconnect the fuel line, then clean it out, then clean out what ever junk ends in the bowl.

meanwhile, back in tehe gas tank...

the pump is going, as soon as it starts slipping out of the gas it overheats and stalls ( don't you just love the concept of using gas a a coolant, for this reason I try never to let my accords go below half), it's one of the more diffuclt one to figure out first time around. Of course if you take 15 gallons of gas when the tank reads 1/2, that's another story.

Hate to be the gadfly around here, but look for my long post on fuel tank/pump issues, there are a few you'll want to know for sure.

it's located on the drive side of the carb.
your gonna have to take off, the black air box thingy . . . . .
or what you can do is disconnect the gas line then have your friend crank the car.
