    over heating

i have a 88 LXi and the heat gauge goes to the H when i run it kinda hard , and sometimes even when i dont. but if i tap on the glass it goes back down. i asked my dad which is a mechanic about this and he told me its the guage. so i was wonderin if anyone else had this same problem. and could my dad be wrong?

He's right. Mine does the same things sometimes. How would tapping on the gauge change the temperature of the engine? It has to be the gauge. It wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the thermostat if you haven't yet. The dealer part with a new gasket isn't much more than $10.

Actually the t-stat and gasket cost me $19.75 at the Honda dealer. No local parts store had the correct gasket, they all had the one for the housing to the head, not the actual thermostat one.
You probably should change the thermostat along with draining, flushing, filling and bleeding the cooling system. After you drain it you should remove all the coolant lines so you can inspect them for leaks.

how to : bleed & flush cooling system

My gauge did the same thing for a while, I replaced it. It still did the same thing, it ended up I had a couple issues to deal with.

my t-stat cost me like 4-5 dollars at advanced, and the gasket was like 2.99 also at advanced. that has been the greatest thing i've done to my car since i've had it.

you know what im talking about if you've ever driven a car that didn't warm up.
