So I was at my local honda dealership and the guy in the parts dept. said I shouldn't worry about chaning my water pump until it starts to leak. His 88 Accord has 178k on it and it's never had the WP changed. Thoughts?

Unless there is a cooling problem don't touch it. When it does go bad go to the howto section of this board and read the thread I made about changing it. It should be on the first page.

I replaced my water pump once and I think the one I replaced was probably original. The only reason I had to replace it is because the bearing went bad otherwise it would still be on there.
No projects. Life consumes my time and money.
156K miles and all the 3g has needed is a new clutch, new muffler, and a new alternator. i'd just leave it where it is unless its messing something up.

About the waterpump, I replaced mine when I opened the hood and it shot coolent in my face (don't worry, i had just started the car and the water it shot out was whatever was in the block already). And kroy, where was your damned how-to then, huh? =P I did my pump like 2 days before you posted it. I didn't remove anything from the car, not even the valve cover, so HA! =P BTW, 220+K miles on that original WP.
dealership are like women they just want your money and tell you anythingh to get it
LX-R coming soon Here's a hint. 89mm stroke/ 41.60cc head /ARP head & main stud's /SRP piston's 81.5mm 9:5:1/Crower Rod's & more to come
dude, then why did they tell me to NOT buy the water pump?
I changed mine along with my timing belt when I bought the car. It is very accessable while you are doing the belt, so why not change it? A new one is only like $25 anyway. I also did the cam seal and the front crank seal as well as the other drive belts for the very same reason.
change it every timing belt... cheap insurance.

I trust the dealership. It is also the same place we bought the Accord 16 years ago most of the major work has been done at the dealership also not that there has been much.
Changing parts is good routine maintenance, but if it's a hard thing to change or pricey, I tend to wait till something else in that area goes bad and I will have easy access to other parts while I'm in there anyhow.
Like for example on my car at least when you do a waterpump, you do the CPS also since it's right there.
