my friend blocked his 97 dodge stratus EGR valve, and he said he noticed a difference in power. I don't totally understand why you feel a difference in power, isn't it just some sort of gas sensor?

no.. it recirculates exhaust gas back into your intake... so basicly... like POS CARB said "your car breaths it's own farts"
It's burnt and unburnt fuel and air.. it takes up space in the compustion chamber and keeps fresh air and fuel from going in.
There are reasons it does this... 1 is to lower emissions 2 is to cool the engine some.

so I should not block it?

Dont block it off!!! Your car will trow a code and will run like shit!! I tried blocking mine last year-it ran horrible!!!!

Mine is not working and it keep throwning a code. It is starting to bug me enough I'm just going to buy another one to get my PGM-FI light to turn off.

It sounds like this would help if there were some way to trick the ECU. Does it read a resistance off of the valve to make sure it's working? Maybe you could just block the valve and then hook up a resistor to the pin-out that makes it look like it is functioning properly...

to much work for me hehe, I'll just leave it how it is

The sensor opens when the computer tells it to at a certain Rpm!! The Egr works while crusing!! The valve is like a button kind thing!!! you wood not be able to trick by resister!!! The easiest way is to get one from the junk yard for 20 bucks like i did!!! You really dont gain Hp without it!! It runs better with it!!!

its not used during wot anyways.

But how about guys that have the b16 intake manifold conversion, there's nowhere to mount the EGR to that manifold??? So basically they won't be able to use it.......![]()

This is all I need to know!
EGR is good...not bad!
Well, let us know how your car likes it or not.........![]()
Hi everyone,
I'm new to this board. I have an '88 Accord LXi hatchback with 197K mi. Only 3 mods. Tokiko gas shocks, cold air intake and disabled EGR.
I thought I'd share a clever way to disable the EGR at virtually no cost. I've been using this mod for several years on my current '88 and previously on my '85 SEi.
I made a blind gasket out of aluminum flashing (two sheets) to go where the EGR tube attaches to the EGR valve. There's no hole for the exhaust gas to flow. I got a new standard gasket to use as a template and as a backup in case I had leakage. A thin layer of Permatex seals it up well. Instead of holes for the two attaching studs I cut slots in my blind gasket. That way when it's time for a smog test (every two years) I can just loosen the nuts and lift the blind gasket out with a pair of needle nose pliars. A five minute job. I also found I need plugs one step colder.
Since the EGR valve still opens and closes the computer is happy. I can't say specifically there's more power but the throttle is more responsive. Sometimes the cruise control hunts up and down slightly.

yea thats a pretty good idea for you that have testing.

Any chance we can get some pics? I like the sound of this and would like to see exactly what you have done so i can do it..Originally Posted by browntimdc

they made and SE-i for the last years of the 2g and 3g (85 and 89)
i'll have to checm em out

i also have been wating to do this mod. i was just ogin to weld some kinda plug in the end, but this sounds lieka better idea. in my state they just look to see fi you have the egr hooked up.

i'd like to see a pic of what he did. Screw the emissions if you can still pass the test![]()
erm.. newb here..
whats EGR?
lol.![]()
Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve. On the carbed models the valve thing is on the passanger side of the carb. It cools down the air before spitting it out into exhaust to prevent high-temp emission gasses from forming. It also robs a bit of power from the engine because of an extra gas loop...
