    AC Compressor Identification

I tried searching and didn't have any luck finding pics that weren't red x's or the info I am looking for. I need to know how to identify what AC compressor I have on my 89 SEi. I can climb under there to look, but what am I looking for, etc.?

I thought the compressor was on the bottom?

At least that is what my Haynes has led me to believe....

It is on the bottom but you should be able to look cown and tell what type of compressor you have. Besides if its got to come out, it comes out from the top, not fun, but thats how to get it out

    Cool.

I will try and take a pic then.

As for the problem. There is some kind of short in the compressor according to the previous owners. When you turn the AC on it doesn't work and it blows the fuse for the rear window defogger. Maybe a loose wire? I really haven't had time to investigate. They converted everything over so that is nice, i just figured new parts would be the answer.

i have a khein sitting in my garage doing nothing. If you need it let me know. It'll cost an arm and a leg to ship though. Give me enough money to cover shipping and a little extra to make it worth my time and i'll send it to ya if you need it.

Actually, thats NOT a denso on your car. The one on ebay is a denso. You could use it but........................ Youd have to get a denso mounting bracket and a new discharge and return line. The 2 compressors use 2 different brackets and different lines as well. The hatch had a keihn. The compressor I got off ebay was a denso. SO I had to get a new bracket for it to mount up. I had to get new lines from Honda as well. The ones from advance auto were WRONG, both of the ones I ordered. The other problem I see id that the denso in the pics doesn't have the suction fitting on top, good luck finding a good one to use, better luck finding the O rings and new allen head bolts for the suction fitting

So it is a Khein.... Was switching to the Denso a pain other than getting the right parts? You remember how much the bracket and lines ran you?

I got the bracket at a local yard for 20 bucks but you can probably get it cheaper at a u-pull. The lines aren't a nightmare IF you order the right ones. Ordering them from Majestc honda is actually NO MORE expensive than buyin them froma local parts store, its Actually cheaper. I think the lines averaged about 55 bucks each, not too bad. Oh and the compressor bracket isn't EXACTLY fun either. Just make sure you have a 14mm 6pt socket and a few different size extensions. It gets pretty nasty where the bracket goes so I would definitely suggest spraying large quantities of engine degreaser in that area before you try and swap the bracket

U-pulls are few and far between here. So I guess I can just order everything I will need from Majestic (is that an online dealer or local to you?). Surprisingly my motor is pretty clean and I will have an ASE certified friend helping me, so hopfully converting to that compressor won't be bad. You think $99 for the compressor is pretty good? Most of the ones I am finding used are close to that much and new are crazy, so I am hoping that this one is right and working. My car was also converted to r-134a (?) will I need to worry about that with the new compressor? What about the compressor clutch? SOrry for all the questions, but you have been really helpful so far!

well you may be in luck................. I just found a denso bracket on ebay

    Denso Bracket
Now all you need is the suction port. May be best to buy a used junk compressor of ebay for that if you can't find one in a local yard. They are 75 new from Honda

Its where the high and low side lines hook into the compressor. Kind of a necessity. If you are still looking at that denso compressor find out if its a type 1 or type 2. The type 2 you can still get the seal/orings for the suction port. I can't find a part number for the type 1. However they ars generic O rings. You'd just have to go to a parts house to match them up

The guy selling has no idea which type it is other than saying it is the four season 57391. I am pretty sure it will work esp if I get the bracket you posted. The only specs he has are the ones I posted above. I think what is going to end up happening, is that I am gonna source these parts and have my shop install them. I just don't have the time. Based on these parts prices, too, I will save a substantial amount of money. Thanks again for all of your help Vinny.

the other one MAY be a type II. Either way the bracket will work on they type 1 or 2. The first one you showed looked like it had the suction port on it. I'd go that route if you can get it

    guy selling a/c on ebay

Buisiness must have picked up, I have seen one of his first a/c's go for $39 (top bid) another for $59, so he is getting what he knows he can get for them now! I think that is b.s. that his last one is going to $175, which got sold for that! He is trying to make up for lost money, the last one he has is at a bill right now. Guess you got to pay the piper? lol (charlie) guy :thumbdown

I bought the one for 59. It works fine. Even 179 is a good price. Only problem in no suction ports on them

    Re: AC Compressor Identification

Does anyone have the pictures still? I'm currently troubleshooting my AC system and trying to identify the compressor.

    Re: AC Compressor Identification

    Keihin (throw it away)

    Denso (keep it around)

    Denso (also good)

Basically, the Keihin has big ugly blocks all around it.
