how about a hole cut in the top of the hood and an air filter sticking out the top
im gonna do this sometime this summer actually..i just got some loan checks in and im getting my car painted so why not paint the scoop to match and i wanted to do the intake/scoop ram air thing ever since i saw it on that one 3g...even if it isnt the most amazing performance mod i think it makes alot of sense...are those intakes pretty easy to install?...i am supposed to use the one from the 92 civic and cut it to fit correct?..what did you use to create the air box heat sheild thing around the filter?

It would look kind of off it it's only on the one side like that. I think it needs to be centered.
ive seen 350Z like that, i think it looks ok. but yea it is a little off. lol, ill put one on both sides and have duel ram air,no but ill have to draw it out first and see if i like it. i think if anything it will work and give me a little more uniqueness

if you have the room to put a scoop on the hood and one on the fender i think that would be sweet build one airbox around the whole thing.....personally im going to try it without moving battery to trunk because that kit is kinda pricey...or is it like $40 i dont remember now..maybe i should move the battery...but i was thinking take the intake around the front of the engine bay and put the scoop in the middle...but that is probably too many bends..i havent decided...im gonna get this jdm turbo scoop...and see how to best mount it..and that will determine my intake setup

That would be a bad idea...
It would seem that only part of the filter would get air ramed into it the rest of the air would be left swirling around it... and the drag created could possibly start adding resistance to the air trying to be sucked in thru the filter... thats just a theory though.

I like the idea of opening that area above the grill... problem is the radiator and radiator support get in the way and that area of the hood is extremly beefy... so cutting there would be a problem and would trun your hood to mush.

I had a hood scoop once that was not in the most pressurised part of the car.... so I made a 3" tall one just for grins... took it for a spin and the metal balloned cause it caught so much air... i had 2 heavy bolts holding the sheetmetal to the hood and large diameter washers to keep the metal from ripping away from the bolt heads.

The boxier the car the better it looks off centered... I would have moved my scoop over more to be infrot of the passenger side, but the carb was more on the drivers side, plus I had that damn bulge in the hood to contend with... but if I had my way the scoop would be tall and be square on the passenger side.

i was thinking it might also need a funnel thing attached to the underside of the scoop directing the air to a smaller opening just bigger than the diameter of the filter...and still build the box around it to catch any excess from blowing into the engine bay...now im thinking that off center would work best...just one bend and straight into the manifold.

thats what we are contemplating on. im thinking the trans am filter assembly will fit. thats what the whole thread is about. which assembly or best way to get functional ram air.
It's not the usual PVC pipe. I used drain pipe fittings and actual drain pipe. Reason being, it's thinner then irrigation pipe/fittings and allow's for more air flow. Plus I had Zero extra space to spare. You can go to Lowes, the drain pipe fittings are kept where they have fittings for rain gutter drains and stuff. It's white plastic (I painted it satin black to match the plastic around the piping).

well if we could modify the ta filter assembly then i could use that mini JDM hood scoop i found...except i just bought an intake
..no i mean mike the guy who already did this he had a scoop and under the hood around the filter he built a box like an air heat shield to seal it off from the rest of the engine bay (im calling it the airbox) ...i was wondering what he used to make that box..because that would greatly decrease drag from air swirling around the filter...but seriously...ANYTHING is pretty much better than the stock plastic rubber crap it has now

It is a plexi-glass ram air box. And I built it so that the air would flow evenly around the filter. I have a small write up that I have not put on 3geez yet. I'm very busy and have little time to finish projects I want to so that's my first priority right now.

seriously guys..i just got finished installing my new intake..after ripping out miles of crappy plastic tubing and tilting the battery sideways and pushing around some hoses....its finally in...ill take pics tomorrow...it sounds amazing and the difference is unbelievable...i dont even see how the engine breathed before...this is by far the best $35 ive ever spent..and yes i got the intake off ebay shipping and all for $35....go out...get one of these if you still have your stock..you will be amazed at the difference...i dont have access to a dyno yet but im working on it.

mike, could you explain how you made the plexie glass air box a little more as into how you fixed them together? it might be more easy and a little more flashy just to construct an air box solely on plexie glass.
