    Performance Cam experience: tell us!!!!!

    OK,
i am starting this thread because after 3 days of reading, i found out that we don't have one nice thread where members with performance cams can tell us how much diff they felt.
anyway, i am going to order a new performance cam. i just want to see which one. i want your opinion.
    Please tell us:
    1. what kind performance cam you have? Company, grind.
    2. your reaction to power change? (in your own words, good, bad or not enough power).
    thanks.

P.S. Lets keep it clean and to the point. i want to make it a sticky thread. So please no post horring and no fights.
    Alex.

"That's the first time your car ever pressed me into the seat." - My friend's exact words.

I'm running with Openloop's mild cam. It's a great upgrade to my car and there's not a moment I'm not satisfied. I get this wicked grin on my face when my car approaches redline and won't quit dishing out the power. Each time I'd throw on another modification I'd start to feel that ~3500RPM surge in power become more and more disctinct.

    i have a delta 272 cam.

noticably less low end, but the top end pulls reaaaaly nice around 4k up... it has a nice sound too it, and all my friends say the car sounds totally badass. even though we all know its slow.

overall i would go with an even crazier cam if i did it again. drivability is not disturbed, and my idle is still fine. i would go with an even more aggressive grind. when your not racing u really dont need low end power. and if you want power, then downshift.

my other mods are in sig.

i would say it did not help as much as header, but its hard to tell since its more of a peaky power gain than the header, which i felt all over the powerband.

how about saying something about y'alls gas mileage. that would be something i'd be looking for. good power increase, but watching what gas mileages are with each cam. i think i'll save some money to get one if y'all can reccomend one.

    so far so good.
i would appreciate if you guys can mention how much you paid.

PS. gas mileage is not important when it comes to performance.

Does anyone know what Openloops website is, Im trying to see if thier grind is cheaper then Colts, Colts is like $139 for a mild grind. As for gas mileage I heard from someone that for a mild grind you will loose like 10 mpg, but that is just what I heard.

that cannot be a reasonable number. you probably lose 10%. imagine what that would do. that's putting $15 in every day instead of every 3rd day. I think that I would take the damn thing out. btw, aqua team hunger force RULES!!

I have a colt triflow cam best upgrade I have ever done. I paid about 135 for the grind and 50 for shipping (to and from canada). It feels about the same as my header highflow cat and catback put together. The specs are on my site. Also my mpg stayed the same.

I've got a colt stage 2.5 or something like that. I talked with geoff before he ground it and we determined the final specs based on what I wanted. Final specs are 272° .402" l on the intake and 292° .413" l on the exhaust. Total cost was $160ish including shipping, duty, etc. I never ran the car with the stock cam in it so I'm not going to give a good comparison there. The car never had a stock carb on it either, first a weber dgv, then 40, then 45 dcoe carbs. The car has always had plenty of low end grunt, decent idle, and been relativly diveable. I think the act clutch effects the driveability more then then cam (it likes to grab and go, too easy to spin the wheels). The car is able to crusie at 1800rpm in 5th and accelerate (nothing breath taking down there but it doesn't fall all over its face). Get the motor over 4000 and hold on, but it has a very broad powerband esp for a carbureted n/a motor. Gas milage was perfectly acceptable with the dgv carb, not so with the dcoe's (maybe 20-25 on the highway with a tail wind drafting a truck, but thats more of a carb then cam issue). Idle has always been decent. Webers are a bit fussy when it comes to idle, but as long as I keep them adjusted it purrs. Theres a little bit of a cam lope and I set the idle on the high side but it sounds mean at idle, not like its barely running.

I have a Colt mild grind. I notice quite a bit more high-end pull, it's sweet For some reason, the engine has a whinier sound to it, like a sewing machine...very odd. But worth the $120 I paid for it. I didn't notice any significant changes in MPG. I have cat-back exhaust, hiflo cat, resonator, CAI, and 4g map sensor.

I got the basic wild grind from colt not the tri-flo... 4,000 to 7,500 rpm powerband
Pulls real good after 4,000. I have a few bogs on the low end but I blame my fuel pump for that.

    cams

    had two cams
with A18 head with tidy headwork
By Pipercams in U.K 275 duration with 10mm lift all round
Good idle slightly lumpy but not much idles at 800rpm good lowe end and mid would pull to 7K with good power and go onto 7.5K with a little loss in bhp.
Gas mileage and emissions were okay but with Twin Webers gas mileage is allways gonna be poor!!
By Pipercams again 285 duration with 10mm lift All round
rough idle 1000rpm idle good low end still pulled really well from 2000rpm upto 7.5K more to do with head than cam, power band was about 3k-7.5K and would go onto 8K with minimal power loss
New grind on it's way by Pipercams 295 duration with 11.5mm lift all round
With the right head and my big valve conversion hoping to get a powerband of 4-9K but i'm expecting huge loss in low end below 2.5K i expect it won't do much but as it's a race car i'm not really worried!!

Just don't forget kids cam should be put in after you've allready got a header, exhaust, big bore TB and will be even better if you get your head worked on even if it's just a little cheap tidy up and some nice new seats!! If you just slpa a big arse cam in a virtually stock car you may loose power that and if your using PGM-FI the computer won't be able to handle it either!!
