Go to the junkyard and buy a new fuel/temp gauge. And then swap it into your existing cluster.

happened to me when i tried to remove the fuel/temp cluster.
here is what you need to do. go to junk yard. find the simular one. swap the speedometer from your old one into your new one and you have new working gauge claster.

PS. you don't need to remove the needles if you are trying to put reverse gauges.

if it's a 87-89 lx/lxi then it has a motor like thingy on the gauge.
but when you take it out and move it about and looking at the pic how you have it sitting, it's going to move like that.
but usally if the fuel guage read's E and the temp reads H, then the cluster is malfunctioned.
    just do what shepherd79 said.
or if ya want a discount then take the motor out only.

Hmmm Automatic guage cluster. Don't see those too often. Looks like you got it all fixed though.

Man how did I miss that. That car must be your daily driver. How hard is it to take the instrument cluster out?? Because I have some reverse guages from PCP that I want to put in. What tools will I need?? Where do you start?? What's the appox time it will take??

Yo bullard123, it's very easy to do.. As a matter of fact I think there's a How-to somewhere on the board about putting gauges on... First thing you'll have to do is pop out the switches (defrost/ dimer/light switch, mirror switch and if you have a sun roof switch) to get to the bottom screws... The top screws are under the panel on top... Once all of those babies are out it's smooth sailing from there...
