    89 carb questions

ok i'm getting abit annoyed with having a carb. i used to have a 87 hb lxi (which i miss dearly) Lately after the car warms up it hasa very difficult time going. for instance going 60 on a long flat straight away and i push in my clutch and the engine goes up to about 4k (which should be 80 or 85 if i remember correctly) I think i still need to finish my tune up on her but she isn't missing so i've been waiting till this monday. Today i was driving around for 1.5 hours and it has hesitating a little bit but not too terrible (not as bad as the constant stalling at every stop) Then i started going up a hill and she lost all power. died right their. so i look under the hood and check for fuel and look at my fuel filters. I pulled off the line after the 2nd fuel filter and put it in coke can and had a friend watch the can too see how much pressure there was. The car turned on great, idled like it should be revved great and moved around....ALL WITHOUT THE FUEL LINE ATTATCHED.... i almost thought about leaving it off and some how rout that lineto the fuel tank because it did soo much better. So just a few hours ago i change out the fuel filters warm the car up...and still stalling... I never had this problem ever and am fixing to just get a donor lxi and do a little bit of swapping. any help or questions...???

phone....pm me if you live in or near Hibbing Minnesota.

I did a search on bad idle and found a few things, but didn't know what it meant cause i've never fooled with carbs or tested for that matter. so the info didn't mean much to me....speaking of carbs i can understand old 80 model carbs for motorcycles..can we adapt an old chevy 2bbl carb on this beast??? not like it would help me diagnose but then atleast people up here would know what i mean when i say i have a chevy 2bbl. ugh... i'm too frustrated right now.PEACE

try using some carb cleaner. You sure your problems aren't ignition related?

I'd re-build the carburetor. Carb. cleaner might help a little, but won't get inside the to clean the jets and venturis.

it might actually be the fuel line, and not the fuel filters. Yea, your going to be told to do a full tune up, and maybe carb rebuild. def check the venturis and do the carb cleaner thing. good luck with it.

Well there is stil fuel in the float bowl, so even with the line removed the carbwill run for a little bit.

If it runs better with the line removed then maybe the float vavle is leaking and you are oveflowing the float bowl.

Here are a few threads to look at...

what are the venturis? a20a1 thanx for the threads.

the other day when the car was running good i sprayed about 1/2 a can of carb cleaner both hot and cold engine. It smoked like a freight train for a bit (which i have never seen before while using carb cleaner) and also after spraying it hot and i drove it around to clean it up all the way it was smoking blue. that was a while ago so it stopped after a day of driving. It might be ignition so i'm going to get a full tune up here in a few seconds. I wanted to put back on accell 8.8's again but i dont have the funds anymore for those. will the 8mm take away the radio hum i hear? I have the same radio that i had in my Hatch which had the 8.8's and it never humed...not even the sub. (which i dont have anymore) now just the radio hums with my new car.

i've seen a few people who talked about carb rebuild how big of a project is that? I can change heads and engines and any part on that car, but as for rebuilding carbs... with the exception of a super easy motorcylce carb... i never have

well does it smoke, when the engine is cold or hot??
if you used seafoam yea it's gonna smoke bad.
and if you spray alot of carb cleaner yea it's gonna smoke.

that scared the crap outta me, when i used seafoam.
then the second time i enjoyed it.
    it was as though i had a smoke screen. . . . . .

it doesn't smoke at all now. I've been driving it now for about an hour and the smoking stopped. I did the directions of the seafoam and it said it would smoke but it only smoked when i added it. After i turned it back on after the 5minutes it didn't smoke a bit. I drove it around and it still stalled. I replaced a couple of cracked hoses that went to the dist. (2 and 52 or 25...they go to the black thingy) still don't know what is up.

i also checked the venturis and they didn't wiggle a bit. The few times i did get it to keep idleing it moved between 500 and 250 rpms'. ugg...

Did you read the EFI swap how-to? It should list all the needed parts.
