Whats a good component set?

Im looking to change my speakers in my 5g accord, looking to get components. Whats a good set of separates? I was thinking either Infinity, MB Quart or Polk... anybody have suggestions?

Focal all the way. If you can find a dealer near you or wanna buy off the net definately pick up a set of Focal componants... best sounding speakers on the market hands down.

I have a set of Polykevlar 136k's... but if you want something cheaper even the Polyglass sound excellent.

Who else but the manufacturer that invented component speakers for cars? Boston Acoustics baby! They have several series of components from their lower-end (but still sounds great) FX series to the "OMFG these rock!" Z series that was just recently introduced.

check out adire audio's koda component set. not a mainstream brand but one of the best for the money, i think.

If you don't want to spend big $$$ on a decient componet system but still want high quality sound look into the Infinity Kappa Componets. You can get them on ebay for around $160ish.

those Kodas look nice but what's up with the responce?



as you can see the "amazing midbass" really doesn't take off until after 100 hz, which is fine if you have subs but wtf is up with that dip? there's like a 12dB difference between 80 and 200 Hz
How do they sound in the car w/out the subs? Are you running them off an amp?

I think any woofer that handles 100W RMS NEEEEDS an amp. Anyone who doesn't have a mids/highs amp has no idea what they're missing

I'm going to have to agree with this one hands down. The Z series are by far the best component set EVER produced for automotive applications.

I had the Pro Series 6.5 components (2 sets, 1 for front, 1 for rear) which ran about $450 back then but I'm not sure what they're at now. My install was clean, but not show winning clean, but when it came to sound, I cleaned house at the shows.

IMO, the Infinity is also an amazing set of separates, but they are too bright for me, and on the flip side of that, the MB's and JL's are also very good, but they had too much mid bass and were not clean or bright enough on the highs. Diamond Audio is as close to the Bostons (Pro's) in regards to sound, but the BA Pro's are just that little nudge ahead of the Diamonds.

of course you need an amp, why would anyone buy components and then run them off a deck?

as for the dips in the koda graph, it's not an anechoic response. it's supposed to represent the actual response in a car interior. for being IN A CAR they look pretty damn smooth to me. if you grab an spl meter, hop in your car and and run un-equalized test tones through almost any mid-sized driver mounted in a door or a kick pod or any sealed or non-ported enlosure for that matter you're going to see a big dip down below 100hz. that's just the way speaker displacement works. sure, you could make a 6.5" speaker and give it a huge motor and excursion so it could play low bass but it wouldn't do it efficiently and probably would have an impractical mounting depth and you wouldn't be able to get good midrange out of it, at least not good enough to be able to make the transition in a 2-way system.

if i had to buy a new set of components today the kodas are what i'd get but right now i'm running 7" image dynamics mid-bass drivers bi-amped and crossed over at 2.5k to a set of kicker titanium 3" midranges hooked with a passive crossover at 5k to 1" image dynamics silk dome tweeters. all this running off u.s. acoustics amps and a pioneer P1 deck. oh, and a 12" adire brahma ported at 30hz on a phoenix gold xenon 1200

wow! Big range of knowlege in this thread...Kodas are good if you can find a dealer...(warranty crap)...for the money...JL TR series, and Infinity are the best (for the money)
