    CV boots replacement?

I just replaced the outer boots on another moedl car and it was a snap (greasy and messy, but still easy). Can the outer boots be replaced on the 3-G easily? In the Honda CD manual it says not to take apart the outer CV joint. If I don't take it apart, how can I get the boot on? It looks like I have to take the inner CV apart and slip the boot on from that end. Is that right? Anybody done that?

yeah the honda cd also says dont take apart the transmission but people do and never have a problem. just like the haynes manual tells you to remove the engine to replace a piston. hahahaha! dont listen to the manuals. if it comes apart then it goes back together. if it doesnt come apart without force then it dont go back together. if all else fails buy a new one! 50 bucks not including core charge

has anyone actually replaced the cv boot?

Thanks for the reply, does that mean you have actually done the CV boots? I understand that lots of things are theoretical and i've been around cars for a long long time. However, it would be nice to hear from someone on this forum who has actually replaced the boots.

I used a split boot.. yeah I know; not as good as a solid boot, but I figured it'll probably last as long as the CV joint anyways. You can always give it a shot and if it doesn't work just take it in for a core and buy a new one. Good luck and let us know how it goes -I'm not sure anyone has posted about doing it the way you are talking..

I did the boots before on my car long ago but I don't remember whether I did the inner or outter ones. I used a mallet and hammered the joint out which was retained by a snap ring/clip inside. I'm pretty sure you can do the outter ones. Hope this helps.

i've seen those "EZ" boots. they sell them at O'reilly auto parts, probley a bunch of other places too. my uncle who's a mechanic, usually works on hondas, told me a while back that he's used em. says they worked pretty well, used em on his cars.

Where do you get the split boots? I once checked with Lordco and they don't carry them.

i dont see any places online that really sell this product. its called EZ boot, guess you are too lazy to read my above post. they sell them at O'reilly Auto Parts stores, i think they also have them at Auto Zone, most likely at Napa. ask you local parts stores if they carry a product called EZ boot or any like products. i'm thinking about doing that to one of mine since the grease inside seems to not be doing its job since it'll make the poping noise around tight turns sometimes, maybe needs to get repacked, even though the axle is less than 3 years old.

you can get them from jcwhitney.com and they are universal. but if your cv joint is bad then you need to replace the joint and the boot. if the boot is just tore or cracked then you can do the split boot replacement but i wouldnt advise it. if the boot is tore and depanding on how long it has been tore you can replace the boot no problem. but if the grease inside has been contaminaed with water, dust, dirt and whatever then the boot replacement will only be a temporary thing. unless you take everything apart and clean it out real well.whats gonna happen if you dont clean it out is all the dirt and water and whatever else gets in there is gonna eat up the joint. the watter will break the grease down into a runny liquid and then its not gonna be grease anymore. the dirt will erode the metal bearings and drastically shorten the life of the joint.but you will be able to drive on it for a while until it breaks but i wouldnt advise doing that. it gets expensive when they break( tow truck, new axle, anything else that the axle shaft destroyed when it came apart, uh maybe even a new transmission.) but yeah the split boot is great to get you through inspection or something but it wont last as long as a new axle. and i belive that advance auto parts sells them for $50 plus a $50 core charge.and they come with a warranty. check it out: www.partsamerica.com enter your car info and it will tell you what you can get. also make sure you pickup the correct drivers side axle there is a difference between the auto trans and the 5-speed axles. the passenger side doesnt matter they are the same.oh and if you are gonna do the boot thing then make sure to pack the joint withplenty of new wheel bearing grease. and clean it out real well.

i didnt read this before i posted but the popping sound and the clicking sounds that you hear are definate signs of an axle replacement comin up! if you read what i posted a second ago i explained what has happened and what will happen if you go too long like that. (belive me its happened to me!)i didnt need a new transmission but almost if i would have kept drivin on it. lost all the fluid though
