    Question Smoked Out? Should I

ok, well i've been looking high and low for this damn plastic tint paint. i found some today and got it. i did a test spray on some old clear plastic. it worked pretty good considering i just did one spray in a spot. i want to do my clear corners smoked because i'm kinda getting tired of them. the more i look at my car, the less i think they match. they do match with the clear bumper lights and headlights. i think i'll also do the bumper lights. just a light tint, not like dark black. i think i'll do the tail lights too. maybe just the orange part though. i wanted to do some of the stuff on my jetta also, i think that would look nice. i think the corners will look cleaner if they are smoked, kinda like the aerodeck corners. i'll show some pix if i do anything. i'd like to do it like on friday or something, but its cold and wet outside, so it wont go on or dry very well.

well i didnt find VHT nite shades anywhere either. although, O'reilly auto parts can order it for me. maybe i should have waited and ordered some. the stuff i found was the kind 88accordalltheway used. i found it at hobbly lobby. i did the test sprays on those scrap lense pieces just to see how it would do. works ok, but i do think i should put some clear coat over it. i tried scraping it off, it took a scissor blade to scrap it off easily. my finger nail wouldnt do it. but it will chip off, so i think some clear coat is best to do. can anyone reccommend a good clear coat that comes in a spray can? i've found Duplicolor, VHT, Plasticote, Krylon UV resistant clear. wonder which one would be best for out door use? probley the ones for automotive use, but i dont want it turning yellow. i think those corners will look way better smoked than they do clear.

oh yeah, should i wet sand the surface lightly before applying the spray? i'd think that would help it stick better.

ah i forgot this also. since the tint spray is a lacquer, should i be using a clear that is also lacquer? i'd think enamal or acrylic wouldnt do good onto the lacquer. just from what i know about paint on cars. i think its best to match the type they are.

i think GI Joes is mostly in the north west of US. i know i've never seen one here in the southern states. anyway, i got some clear. made sure its non yellowing. now i think i'll test it out on the scrap stuff to see how it does. its sort of warmed up today, so i think i'll be doing my corners. maybe i'll try my clear bumper lights first since i can make some more if i screw up. maybe i should do my tails too. that might look nice.

yeah, i think the smoked lense look does look really nice. you'd probley have noticed it on some nicer models of VW's. i've already gone ahead and started on my bumper lenses. i did 2 coats of tint and 4 coats of clear. hopefully this clear coat will dry to a shinny finish because coats 1,2, and 3 werent as smooth as i'd like. coat 4 of clear i did closer to the lense surface because i'd noticed holding it farther away makes it more of a textured finish when i did it on my scrap pieces. they looked pretty good when i put the lenses on to see what they'd look like.

well the front bumper lights look great. i tried to do the corners and "eye lid" trims. this weather sucks ass. it was sunny and i thought it was less humid today, but its bull shit. i cant get the stuff to go on properly. even with the help of a hot halogen lamp. i'll just have to wait for a while i guess because february weather is being a real ass hole! it was even warmer today than it has been, mid 70's. when i did this spray the other night on the test pieces, it was cold. but then again it was like 30 something % humidity, so that makes a big difference. during today it was 70 something %, right now its past 90%. damn this tropical weather!
