    89 Accord Engine

    hey guys..

i have an 89 accord with a 2.2L FI and the miles are gettin up there.

I'm lookin to find a crate 2.2 somewhere. Someone told me that Japan gets rid of engines after 10,000 miles.

Can someone point me to the right place?

    Thanks.

Sure you don't have a 1990 Accord with the F22?

you can get engines from japan that are low mileage, but they wont have THAT low of miles (usually anyway).

hmotorsonline.com should be able to get them for ya.

Sorry...I realized I missed some info..

I've had the car 3 years, and the 2.2 is the 4th engine I've had in it...the stock one went bye bye when I got it...

i'm confused. are you saying you swapped an F22 in the 4th time? or you have a 90 accord? 3geez have the flipup headlights, came with either a 2.0L A20A1 carbed or A20A3 PGM FI and look alot different than the 90-93's. i hope you know what you are talking about.

Ok..lets try this one more time for all the kiddies out there..

I have an 1989 accord...I've engine swapped it 4 times, going from the stock 2.0 engine to a 2.2 liter....how much clearer you need me to be? Yes, I realize the 89 had a 2.0 in it, and yes I realize a 1989 has flip up lites. What I'm telling you is what I have, and it is what it is.

My original question was, and still is...does anyone know where to get these motors that are shipped from japan with 10,000 miles on them?

    My question to you is?

Why would you want to get one of those JDM when the USDM is just as good. Just rebuild your original.

And the law in Japan only allows a maximum of 40,000 miles before it must be replaced. So the chance of you finding one with 10,000 is very remote. The way this works is every car when it is dropped for inspection or routine maintenance the garage has the obligation to inspect it and repair it to goverment regulation no matter what the cost. This sucked as a US serviceman stationed in Japan.

I've seen a JDM advertised on Ebay for about $625 plus shipping but for that kind of cash I'd just rebuild a A203a.

I've actually considered rebuilding it, but honestly, working 6 days a week currently takes most of my time.

But, if I did decide to do so, what kind of stuff could I expect when doing just that? Like, how much is typically spent doing so?

I've recently put on a new alternator, timing belt, water pump...so those 3 things should be ok for a rebuild right?

Are we talkin about just replacing gaskets, getting the heads done and what not? Ive seriously never had to rebuild an engine before. I have the tools and the know-how, just never got into it before.

    Thanks for the answer NSW.

I've seen full rebuild kits on ebay for abour $285 + shipping.

Basically all your seals and gaskets main bearings, rings, valve seals other than the time it takes its really a no brainer.

But your talking about a kit for an a20, which apparently he doesn't have since he has a 2.2 liter engine. What kind of engine do you have in there? The a20 and jdm b20 are the only ones that fit on the stock mounts. That means he must have custom mounts made for another engine. The f22 or h22 maybe? If that's the case alot of people on here are going to want info on mounts, axles, wiring harness, ecu, clutch pedal setup, etc.

well if that's the case that you have a 2.2L engine in there, we wouldn't know an EXACT good source for f22's cus almost no one here has swapped either a f22 or h22 engine in a 3gee. if we did, we wouldn't bother with the f22 and rather go for the h22 or h23. used engines are everywhere online either from japan or domestic, just look it up online as "90-93 accord engine". try the marketplace in 4th gen accord forums. eBay is also a good source as well as others. but i doubt you'd find any that's under 10k miles - all original and not rebuilt.

IMO, if you DID do a swap to an f22, it wasn't a wise choice cus #1: the engine is crapping out on you #2: the f22 is still SOHC and no more powerful than the A20A3. so i say if you are going for another engine, go with h22 or h23 and take pics for us. good luck.

If you're buying a used stock engine, I would reccomend buying one locally. A good shop will test compression and things like that before they pull it out and write down the exact mileage of the motor. Scamming importers always say JDM motors have about 35,000 miles or less but that is not always true. There are importers who have a ton of junk engines and say it has somwhere between 10,000-35,000miles because it came from Japan when they really have no idea what the real mileage is. My uncle in Japan does alot of driving for work and his car had 197,000kms with the original engine. He traded it in for $100 but since it's got extremly high mileage for a Japanese car (even with a mint body and interior), it's worthless so they'll probably strip it down for parts and ship it overseas. I feel sorry for the guy who buys it thinking it's only got 35,000kms.

These Skylines on this site (importer in Canada) lists a few cars recently imported. So they were on the road in Japan up until recently.
    http://www.cannonball-r.com/import%20car.htm

The lowest mileage car still has 87,000kms (55,000miles) and the highest has 110,000kms (68,000miles). It's not uncommon for older cars to have mileage like this even in Japan. It's still low mileage for us but you don't want to pay top $ for something like that thinking it has extremely low mileage (less than 35,000miles). If you look around on other boards, there are alot of guys who got scammed with crap H22 and B series motors from shady importers.

So if you're buying a JDM motor for an older car, go with a dealer with great rep as they will know what the mileage was and they will also test it before selling it. If you don't want to deal with the possibility of headaches, I'd just buy a USDM motor at a local wrecker that you can see in person and bargain with them. Around here, I can get USDM motors for 3rd and 4th gen Accords for $200-$450US with 160,000kms-200,000kms (100,000miles-125,000miles).
