    lower ball joints

i remember about 2 years ago a mechanic said mine needed to be replaced but i brushed it off since i didnt have the money. I was wondering what purpose they serve and what happens when they go bad? ive heard it can be terrible when they go out. also what are some estimates on getting them replaced?

they are the pivot point and connection of the lower arm to the hub. so, if it actually seperated when you were driving you would be in a world of pain.

ball joints themselves cost $30-50. i don't know how much it would be for someone to install them. if you have time i would recommend buying the ball joints yourself and then removing your hubs and take them to a machine shop to have them installed. you could get new wheel bearings pressed in too while you're at it.

ball joints can be a pain in the ass to do, but ive usually pounded them out with a 5lb hammer or air chisel, then tapped em back in, no press. When they go bad its usually catastrophic if they fail, the wheel will slam right back into the wheelwell and lock up the tire and youl lose control of the car, seen it happen a few times. Get it changed before it fails

yah you can do em yourself, with a big hammer to get them in and out...
but if they go bad they start squeaking like hell... and if they go OUT, shid you're gonna be in total loss, your front end will be uncontrollable.
