It's about time someone posted a brake upgrade. I see so many newbies asking what mods should they do first, then eveyone is telling them to do engine upgrades. But IMO it's far better to upgrade your brake and suspension first. Going fast might impress the boyz, but it's not gonna help when you need to avoid an accident (like AccordEpicenter's earlier post about having to stand on the brake to avoid rear-ending 2 large dump trucks suddenly in front of him).![]()
And that's why I envy the European Accord owners, with ALB they don't need to be scared to brake in the rain.![]()
Iceman, you didn't mention having to fab a custom bracket like RobT5580, which would make easier than the big brake upgrade. How are the brakes? If they are super good, I might do this instead of the big brake upgrade. The rotors look like stock LX-i size, how big are they? TIA.

Hmm I dunno. I'm in the process of getting a 2nd car right now for daily driving so I can work on the 3gee properly. I think the drivetrain is going to shit soon. No more than 2 months or so left. It slips like around 2nd and 3rd gear. I think it's reaching the end of its life. The engine is ok though cus it was replaced just a couple years ago. But it's also old. I'm waiting for a b-series swap kit from Ray Fong or just get a remanufactured A20A3 ($950) and do a 5 spd swap. At idle, I hear a metal whirring sound coming from the flywheel area. It's also auto. So yeah, 5spd swap would DEFINITELY be next after the brakes or complete engine/tranny swap. I still drive the car to work which is only 5 miles away. But I try not to take long trips till I get a 2nd car so the 3gee can rest awhile till it gets new heart and lungs, so to speak.Originally Posted by Vanilla Sky

But, they definitely stop hell of alot better with AEM pads than stock rotors and pads. An especially good upgrade since they cost about the same or even less than OEM replacements. See my price quotes in my previous posts.
BTW, my stock rotors and pads were only 3 months old. Definitely not worn out or anything. If anyone wants them, I'll sell them. So yeah, there IS a big difference between these and stock. I highly recommend this upgrade.

As long as you maintain your brakes I really don't think a brake upgrade is the first thing people should do. I had no problem locking the wheels on my 86 hatch with new stock pads and rotors doing 80mph. No point in upgrading perfectly adequate braking system unless you are going fast enough to need it. While they do certianly look nice and braking feels better. It's not the first upgrade I would recommend on a stock 3g. Now if you need new pads and rotors anyway, you might as well upgrade when you replace them if you have the money, but that wasn't the case here.Originally Posted by TheWatcher
hondas are very underbraked cars. The point of upgrading the brakes is so you have more control and less fade over the stock units, this gives more predictability and greater reliability, which you will need when you start going fast.

I do custom fiberglass work and I made a custom bodykit for my 3gee. You can use the 90-93 Accord rear bodykit and 90-93 Integra front, but still has to be custom fit and mounted, and the side skirts have to be custom. They have bodykits for our cars now. You can usually find them on eBay or sites like Andysautosport.com or Creativeautoonline.com.Originally Posted by gfrg88

I think the brake upgrade is a must for every 3g (except the 88-89 LX-i and SE-i). The brakes fade really quickly when solicited more than normal.

Nissin brake pads are the AEM brake pads. And yes the 89 Lxi/SEi front calipers are Nissin brand too. Your paint probably got soft cus you probably spilled brake fluid on it or you have a slight leak. Brake fluid softens and eats up paint so you have to be careful. That's why you use a piece of small tubing to connect to the brake bleeder nipple so you don't squirt brake fluid all over the place when you bleed the brakes. Also, there is 500 degree engine paint, and 1500 - 2500 degree paint. Also, it's also about the prep work. You have to thoroughly clean all the brake parts of brake fluid and brake dust/debris till you can run your finger on them and nothing gets on it. Do light mist coats of paint in 1 minute intervals instead of 1-2 heavy coats. This assures the paint to get into the tiny crevices and rough surfaces without runs.Originally Posted by HondaBoy

The bigger rims are also part of the reason I wanted a brake upgrade. I also figured the brakes were never cleaned in ages so I thought it was a good time to clean the brakes, upgrade to better rotors and pads (ones that won't rust), and do some painting to give it that detailed show quality look.

i go really fast now and stop good but i really need better suspension, she torque steers like a MOFO. I can keep her under control at 130+ but shes just not as confidence inspiring as id like, so id like to get revalved bilsteins, springs that are AT LEAST 100% stiffer and 1.5" drop, and bigger sways, probably 205 or 215/50/16 or 15s on the tires, it feels scary out of control at times in 2nd gear. I think the weak spot in honda suspensions is the strut valving, not the sping rates however. When i go fast enough to require a roll bar (6pt) thatll really stiffen up the chassis.

Took the car out for a highway run today. The brakes are really sticky. It would launch you off your seat if you don't wear seatbelts. Could be the fact that my car is light right now cus it's gutted with just the dash, 2 front seats, and front door panels left. Anyways, literally no brake fade. The brake dust goes into the drill holes of the rotors and gets spewed out the rotor vents. Very nice brake dust I might add. Like silver glitter powder. Not that nasty black stuff. I might try EBC Greenstuff pads next but AEM is definitely the best.![]()

I remember the few times I had my malibu over 100mph braking was real scary. Never again am I going to buy $12 a piece rotors for even a slightly fast car. In fact this is the same way with my 3g right now and if I still have it in a few months I'm gonna at least get some brembo blanks so they won't warp like crazy like cheapies. Those rotors look great!

they look really nice but sooner or later stuff gets dirty. The best thing I ever did was get bigger 12" rotors. now I just need 2 piston calipers and R compound tires.
