so noobish it hurts: spring question

you don't know how brain damaged I feel having to ask this.

I'm installing my rear H&R springs, the old springs where cut, so I can't really tell:

does the tight end of the spring (?)(the end with smaller gaps between the wire) go at the top or bottom of the assembly (on the rear)?

on my other 3G, it looks like it goes on the bottom, but then the "H&R" lettering would be upside down.

Mine sure look progressive. They definately have one end with smaller gaps. Looks like you must have that end on top. So, I guess the springs on my other car are upside down.

The ground end of the spring goes toward the top. The coil that's just cut off fits into the perch. If I remember right that puts the close coils toward the bottom.

hey accordepicenter, just cause hes a noob on this site doesnt mean that he hasent been around cars for awhile, im still a nebie here but iv been racing dragsters since i was 8 and have been with cars even earlier then that, im just saying its just a question and theres no point to start bringing him down

Okay. I didn't notice one end being ground off to fit the upper mount like they are on the front, but it looks like there is in Busted_Blue's second pic. I'll just have to take the assembly apart again and have a peek. I've replaced my engine before, taken apart the entire steering / suspension before, and I've been on the board for a couple years. Just felt quite nubly having to ask which way the springs go in.

does it make a difference? wouldn't the close coils on bottom stiffen it up alittle. progressives are supposed to apply full rate all the time while straight coils apply gradually. At least thats what I believe I read. Does anyone know if it would matter?

linear is always constant.

Progressive = gets stiffer the more it gets compress (hence progressing)

The spring will compress the same way however it is installed. The load it sees is the same if the close coils are at the top or at the bottom. The orienation only really matters because the spring perch is shaped differently than the upper mount. Ideally the close coils are are the top, which slightly reduces unsprung weight, but the fit on the ends is more important.
