    DIY Coilovers

This guy home made coilovers for his car. The cost was $437 total and that includes the shocks! He made these for his Locust (a kit car I believe). Probably rides like a bumbleball with wheels, but still a cool idea for the Do-It-Yourself-ers here.

    Check it here.

Thats au$437. But don't follow those instructions too closely, they are for shocks, not struts. Struts are similar though, only you need to have the lower spring perch welded to the strut body, or if you are useing an adjustable collar you can just set it on the old spring perch. I got a set of cheap generic civic coilovers to work on my gen2 for alot less then what au$437 equates to in us$. It isn't the best thing in the world, lowering a car with nonadjust able camber and useing conciderably stiffer springs on the stock struts isnt the best thing. I'm going to attempt some custom struts in the no too distant future, still in the r&d stage, along with 100 other things I want to do, I'll make some posts when it gets farther along.

Well as the guy points out he's using some not so good struts for his project. You can already get basic coilovers for $140, add springs with your choice of spring rates:super: $200 and then add your choice of struts, which really should be koni's if your not going to stiff.

No I am not going to go any where near air bags. I'm setting it up for auto-x/I like driving a bone ratteling car. I'm thinking more along the lines of finding some inserts that have the desired length and stroke (I haven't looked into that part yet) and will fit into the old stock houseings. Then I'll cut off the old spring perches and chop the housings down to fit the inserts. Put some adjustable collars on them and you get the picture. I still need to do something about the tops while I'm at it. Have any suggestions on some cars that might have some rather tiny strut tops. The gen2's are rather huge, and if I could adapt some smaller ones and then build a slotted plate that would allow them to be moved to adjust the camber that would be great, atleast up front anyway.
