    89lxi vs 87lx stiffness

are the 89 lxi's supposed to be a lot stiffer than the 87 lx's. I know theres a bigger front swaybar and one in the back , but on anything bigger than road cracks it feels like i'm hitting a brick. did the 89s come with progressive springs, because thats whats on there. could it be dead shocks/springs or something of that nature? over a bouncy road that slightly dips up and down it has good manners and comes to the middle after 1 bounce which is whats confusing me.

sounds like you have bad struts... could possibly be worn out springs and dead bushings, too...

No, the '89's did not come with progressive springs.

How do you know the springs are progressive? If the springs have been replaced with progressively wound pieces, then the (previous) owner also had to put on much stiffer front struts, to keep from bouncing. He may therefore have put on overly stiff struts, which could possibly give you the ride of which you speak.

I suspect, however, that if you have a high-mileage car, with original springs, they might be worn out and semi-collapsed, which could give the visual impression of progressive windings (the windings coming together is some places). The car should be sitting lower, with less suspension travel available, and no progressive winding to get stiffer the more the spring is compressed. In this case, even with good shocks, the suspension could be hitting the stops when the car hits a bump of good size.

I think those are your two most probable situations. I bet on the second.
