Help: 87 Accord PCV valve

After some searching I finally found where my PCV valve was located on my honda accord lx (87). My question is this: why was it covered in oily deposits??? I replaced it with a new one...but my question remains...why the oily residue? Is this bad...or have others experienced this as well.

by the way...i think the old one was operating fine...atleast, it sounded OK.

this sight is better than i thought...i looked at my post and the underlines word, "PCV Valve"....took me to my answer...now i can trouble shoot everything else wrong with my car....yeeehaaa
