Tries to die when I accel, sputtering

Hey all whas goin on. I'm having problems with the 3G again.
    87 DX Carbed, Manual

It will crank right up, but when i press the gas too rev it in neutral, or accelerate while in gear, it acts like it is about to stall. I can get up to hwy speed, but really sluggish and missing.
    - I replaced fuel filters
    - Put in good gas
    - New plug wires

What else do i need to check? My pops is suggesting fuel pump? I've never replaced it. But dont want to if that's not whats wrong. I've been trying to search.
    - Man this is messed up, I'm supposed to go in for paint Tomorrow night.
Any help from u guys is great. Thanks

    - J

just because no smoke or light colored oil doesnt really throw the head gasket idea out. my 88 lxi had a HG problem, and no smoke out pipe, and no water in the oil. i could still drive it, but it took a while to get up to speed. (no compression) is it overheating or anything (after a reasonable amount of time)
