    gas smell on dipstick

i checked my oil today , rubbed a little on my finger
and smelled it.it smelled like gas. not real strong but
the smell was there. this was after i took the car around the block a couple times.(normal operating temperature).
sometimes ,not always ,when i start the car you can smell gas,
not real bad , but again you can smell it.
the pgm-fi light is always on. ive changed the fuel filter.
i ran the diagnostic test , and the code 12 was flashed on the ecu
underneath the drivers seat. i was told that "12" was the egr valve
    either unplugged or needs replacement.
is the egr valve important enough to replace?
does any of this tie in together?

it could be that the egr valve is stuck open and is recirculating exaust into the intake when it's not supposed to. you also might have a bad o2sensor sometimes this won't throw a code but can stick and cause a rich mixture. if you have to replace the valve see if someone on here has a good used one,the efi valve is computer controlled and very expensive. they usually don't go bad so a good used one shouldn't be hard to find.

also because the ecu's throwing a code it might be running in "limp" mode meaning your a/f would be super rich possibly contributing to the gas smell.

You might want to pull the spark plug(s) to check their condition against these pictures, http://www.boschusa.com/images/SparkPlugFaces.pdf.

You're smelling gas, so not all the gas is being burned at ignition. The spark plugs ignite the fuel, so it makes sense to start looking here first, and work your way down the line.

Looking at your spark plugs will help you troubleshoot your problem/confirm your suspicions.

I'm not really a tech guy, but that's where I'd start. You always troubleshoot at the place a problem occurs and work your way back. That's why doctors run so many tests, to diagnose the problem/confirm their diagnosis, before taking corrective action(s).

I hope this helps, good luck.

    Peace.

If your oil smells like gas, you may have blow by. check the compression in the cylinders. if the rings don't seal right, you will have gas in the oil.

If the oil smells like gas, you may have a leaking injector or a bad fuel pressure regulator. If the oil is creamy-looking. or just thin, it may indicate a bad head gasket .

you may have a plugged pcv system too, if crankcase blowby is collecting in the crankcase it will make the oil smell like gas. this can also trip an egr code.

thank you all so much for the info.
i will check it all out and find what the problem is.
i recently adjusted the tv cable ,and had an assistant
hold the accelerator to floor to check for free play in the tv cable.
the car was shut off at the time though.
    could that have flooded it?

No fuel should escape from good injectors unless the engine is on (key in position II or III). Your adjustment shuold not have flooded the engine.

I may sound like a complete idiot but , where would you recommend
that I start to find whats causing the gas smell in the oil ? give me a break ,I am only 17 , Im new at this stuff ,especially with hondas. So far so good ,Im learning as i go , its not very hard , just need a little direction.
I have never had this problem before ,and never known anybody personally
that has. In a matter of about 2 months I knew my 91 chevy corsica forwards , backwards ,sideways ,inside and out ,and all around.
I am doing the same with my accord. I appreciate all your help.
By the way ,the oil is always at the correct level when i check it ,
and it looks the way it looked when it came fresh out of the container.
it feels like normal oil ,well maybe a little thin.

Do a compression check on all you cylinders, more likely as mentioned, you have blow-by past the cylinder rings. If you results vary more than 20 percent from highest to lowest reading, you have problems.

When doing the test, take out all the spark plugs. Disonnect the coil, & hold the throttle open all the way. Disconnect the fuel relay too.
