Found the problem (56k Unfriendly)

Hey guys, I am back with some good and bad news.

The good news is I didn't blow a hole in my piston, thank goodness, I don't know what I would have done. (Bought another motor I suppose )

So here is what happened, as I said I knew the car was running lean but I didn't worry about it for two reasons, firstly the carb had just been sent away and reconditioned and the mechanic had fitted it all back together and what not. Secondly as I understand it there is a cover which has to be remove to adjust the mixture? Seemed like too big a job just to turn a screw.

So, now I need to know where the screw is located for the mixture so I can adjust it, many, many thanks to anybody with pictures and or advice.

As you can see by the pictures, it was running rediculously LEAN.

Just a tip for anyone next time. Look at your spark plugs that tells you what is hapening in the motor.

that lean condition caused the exhaust valve to burn. Not pretty.

I laughed when I saw the hole in the valve, it cracked me up, I couldn't believe a chunk of it was actually missing.

Going to take the valves otu and inspect the seats, I think they will be find, I will just get a new valve depending on how expensive they are, maybe four new exhaust valves. There is a place I know of which will seat all the valves and make sure there is nothing wrong with the head, they will do it all for about $80-$90.

So I will put the head back on with a new headgasket and maybe timing belt, I will check the price on that too.

BTW, I knew it was running lean from the spark plugs, (it also coughed/sputtered at high RPM), that is how I knew it needed adjusting, but as I said I do not know where the screw is and whether or not there is a cover which has to be removed in order to access the screw.

So does anybody have any info about adjusting the mixture?

yup i lenrned that i was running on 3cyl's cuz one of my spark plugsd was dead

The mixture screw is on the back side of the carb near the base plate. It has a tab in there you have to pry out. The scew is behind it. (don't have a pic of it at the moment)

Turn the screw in will lean out. Turn the scew out, richens the air/fuel mixture. Some of these carb gurus might know how you set it where it needs to be. From what I know, it is halfway from turned all the way in & all the way turned out.

jeez looks like fun,, kinda looks like the same thing that happend to my car... they wernt burned up that badly though,, were you by chance also blowing black smoke every once in a while when the engine was still together?? just wondering, good luck with the rebuild

No, the car never blew smoke or anything after the carb was put back on. It did 'diesel' every so often.

Just tried to get a price on the valve. Apparently nobody sells them seperately so I have to buy a used head for $150

I will go see if I can see this mixture screw now...

nice yeah...get a new timing belt, water pump and replace all the seals while you are in there

Thanks for your help guys, I really appreciate it. I do have one more question though, where the heck is the fuel filter located? I have no idea, somebody told me but I still can't find it.

We have decided to sell it after we get it back together so we aren't going to worry about replacing the belt or water pump. Want another Honda preferably manual, probably end up getting a Prelude or another Legend.

There are 2 fuel filters. Take the left rear tire off. The filter is beside the gas tank under there. That one is in a tight spot & a pain to change out. The other fuel filter is in the engine compartment, follow the gas line out of the carb going toward the master cylinder, it's right in that general area.
