How old is too old for boost?

Hey everybody, been reading around here for a while but this is my first post.

I have an 89 accord coupe Ex-i. I want to go turbo A20, but the engine already has about 300K km on it, is this too old to have some reliable boost?

Any reply would be greatly appreciated.

    check your compression.

does it smoke? does it run well, does it still seem to have some snap and make good power?

what is your exact plan to boost it? im sure it would handle a few pounds for a while, but is it a daily driver, is it your only car, do you want 4-7 psi or 8+ psi, how much are you prepared to spend to turbo it, do you plan on running effective fuel management....

lot of stuff you have to keep in mind, and there is tons of info on this site to help you get started. read up in the performance and project sections, u will find gold!

    Thanks alot for the reply.

It still seems to have a little pep to it. I'll check on the compression. It's my only car and will be daily driven. 4-7 pounds of boost is just what im looking for. I really dont want to spend more than $1500 on this project, if it's possible. As far as engine management, i haven't quite decided yet, but im trying to keep costs to a minimum, without sacrificing too much quality or reliability. I know u get what u pay for.

I'll keep reading up in the performance and project sections, and im glad to hear that boost isn't ruled out completely.

    Thanks.

    ps.
    welcome to 3geez!

if you are crafty, or know some people who are, i think you could emulate jason's (accordepicenter) setup for close to $1500. you will have to get creative though on stuff like intercooler and turbo and bov choice. a low cost route would be scoring a complete setup from a DSM. a 14b turbo and bov would be a cheap way to start your setup, and you could probably use the SMIC inside the engine bay or even put it out front if you want to be a bit ghetto. injectors would be 450cc's out of a dsm, as the most logical choice, and for low cost managament, i would get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, SAFC to control fuel, and MSD BTM to pull timing. stealthmodeperformance.com has good prices on oil lines, but you will probably need to decide on a turbo before you buy those.

you're never too old for boost.

boost isnt something you should cut corners on. if you do, you'll always have problems. just something to keep in mind.

and another thing. you can have 2 and only 2 of the following.

    Fast, Cheap, and Reliable

    Fast + Cheap isnt Reliable
    Fast + Reliable isnt Cheap
    Cheap + Reliable isnt Fast

so pick which way you wanna go. and good luck

Re: How old is too old for boost?

I am aiming for all three (Cheap, Reliable, and Fast), but it will be a VERY Slow build up as I find deals on parts at junkyards. And there are some places that you just can't cut costs on (forged pistons if I go higher boost...).

    So far I have:
    T3 50 trim .48/.42 Turbo $30
    Turbo Rebuild Kit $80
2 Intercoolers $20 (not sure of what I will be using yet)
    OBD-1 ECU: $18
    B18B Intake: $15
    4th Gen Distributor: $30
Hacked together OBD-0 to OBD-1 harness: $15 and lots of time soldering

    Still looking for:
    450cc DSM injectors
    BOV

    Still building:
Homebrew TIG welder so I can make a exhaust manifold
