    Cheap speed...

I figured out the budget for my GSR swap: roughly $3500- $4000. Not an amount of money I'll be coming across any time soon. So, for now I'm going to have to work with what I have which is an A20A1 carbed motor. I need some Ideas for how to add considerable horsepower on a limited budget. I refuse to use nitrous, btw.

    Some Ideas I've had:
    1. D.I.Y. port and polish head (kit goes for about $50 and comes with detailed instructions)
    2. MPFI conversion- does anyone know how much this would cost?
    >or<
    3. Weber performance carb

That's All I have so far... all other ideas are welcome. I'd like to add at least 40 horses and I can't really go over $700 right now

Just because I use an old distributer cap as an ashtray does NOT make me a redneck!

    Re: Cheap speed...

Black Box... as in the one with like 20 tiny little tubes coming out of it? That's a new concept to me. I was under the impression that those were all vacum lines necessary to make the engine run properly. Before I do this, I want more info. Is there a special procedure? what do I do with the inlets the tubes get disconnected from... plug them up? How much of a difference will this make when I disconnect it? Is there anywhere I can find a how-to on this procedure?

Sorry for the large number of questions... when I do things, I like to make sure I do them absolutely right.

i dont cut n paste too well sheperd 79 has the thread that goes all the "way" if you can go with total removal.
and ya it gives more power follow the threads above for different variations worst that can happen is you average 20mpg rather than 25-30
that is in my opinion as that is what has happened with mine, again i do recommend leaving the choke on be very careful it is better to cut vacuum lines rather than pull them as all the black plastic stuff tends to break off when you tug on them. take pictures so you can always put it back together if you dont like the results.

    Re: Cheap speed...

They both go all the way... but some found it better to keep the air jet installed as well as keep it vacuum secondary.

That is part of the reason the different stages are there...

The initial vacuum removal was all the way. but people bitched about it, so I had to draw some diagrams to give them choke and other functionalities.

As for any air fuel screw adjustments, you're better off leaving it alone unless you know what you're doing.

    Re: Cheap speed...

Well... I think I have a good start here. This is what I'm thingking about doing:
    1. Weber carb
    2. Port and polish
    3. Delta Cam
    4. Stage 2 black box disconnect. (I'll try it, diagram everything, and that way if I don't like the results, I can just reconnect it)

I do have one final question; how much horsepower and tourque (rough estimate) will I gain with all of this done?

    Re: Cheap speed...

I don't understand your list, If you get the weber you wont be using the black box anyways.

The vacuum removal is for the stock carb.

    Re: Cheap speed...

i am not sure i believe the cam should be good
for at least 15hp another 10-20 on the carb?
i dont see why total improvement couldnt be at least 30hp at least but i havent done any of that
i am going by what hot rod magazine says from typical improvements on v-8's which should be similar?

    Re: Cheap speed...

if you have stock carbs and stock exhaust system, a cam (ESPECIALLY a large one like a 282) is going to be pointless on your motor. if you have a nice flowing exhaust and carbs, then a 282 would make a really nice difference, but with the stock header and exhaust, i would worry about those first before i get a cam. just my opinion.

i think S&S (dont know if anyone has ever used one) and pacesetter are your only choices. pacesetters 'work' fine, they just fit weird and have lame joint in there instead of a sexy flex pipe.
