    Carb Turbo?

I just bought a 1988 Accord Dx 5spd for $75 from a coworkers friend.I want to boost the hell outta it but its currently carb so im not sure which way to go.Ive been reading about the b20a swap and also converting to FI but can i just turbo the carbed motor.I havent found anybody on here who has tried so im not sure it would be worth it.I want a mid 13 second daily driver but i dont know which route to take.I have decent income but im not familiar with hondas that much let alone carbed hondas. Please help.

please tell me by escort you mean prostitutes...
and any turbo you do or a b20 swap will require so much work and moddification you might as well go for the FI while your at it. not impossible many other have done it on this site before.

    Re: Carb Turbo?

ok there is a bunch of knowledge out there on how to do this with webber carbs,it's been done before, check with redline/webber performance. it's really not that hard once you get the turbo in. the best way to do this is i can't remember what they call it,but the carb sits in a sealed box and thats pressurized by the turbo. you can set up a webber carb jetted for this type of use. if you buy a webber conversion kit for our cars i believe it will fit most webber carbs. just do some searching on he web for webbers set up in this aplication.

why do you say that? they were doing webber setups like this before i was born and i'm 33 now. all they do is pressurize the air in the box to higer then atmospheric pressure. it's a very old and well proven way of turboing a carb car. you can do this with any carb you just have to set it up properly to operate at the boost pressure you want

im planning on running the stock keihn carb with my turbo setup... the only real modification that you might have to do to it is grind the jets down... but really you could patch up the stock air box so that there weren't any holes, and run your piping to it... it would take some cutting and welding but I think that it can be done

    Re: Carb Turbo?

There are more things to seal up then the stock air box... the stock carb has more holes then swiss cheese. may need to solder the brass vacuum ports shut... and thread in a plug to seal the vacuum to the choke puller if it turns out the choke diaphragm doesn't hold boost. You should put seals on the throttle shaft and convert the secondary to a boost refrenced secondary or mechanical secondary then solder the venturi vacuum port on the carb that went to the secondary... next would be the air bleeds, and air jet contorller, those holes may need to be sealed if the air jet controller doesn't like boost... or you may need check valves in places to allow vacuum but prevent boost from getting in. also you have the power valve to deal with unless you want to have it constanly on, it'll be easy to put a boost vacuum line to it but there is no way to add in a return spring easily... so it will be on even with boost... but you can remove the spring that is there and hope that any vacuum at idle would hold the plunger up enough to keep the power valve from opening.

Boosting the keihin Isn't something I would like to be the first to do. I think a simpler carb like the weber would work fine.

    Re: Carb Turbo?

Well I want to see a turbo keihin... but I think it's not worth the trouble.
    Plus it's a small carb.

I wonder if Synchronous is better then Progressive or vice versa... when boosting a carb.

if I don't run the keihn... I want to run a 500 cfm holley... I know it takes some modification to the intake, but its cheap enough to make the fabrication worth while

Turbocharging a carbed engine... It can be done, and it has been done, but it's a major pain in the ass and it will require almost daily maintainance from what I've heard.

Here's a better route. The one I'll take if I can't get a motor swap going.
    Weber 32/36 with short ram
Delta cam (they'll help you figure out which regrind fits your application best)
    High comp. pistons (maybe 10.5:1)
    Port and polish head.

That will give you a good start, then you can actually win some races and make some money to do more work.
    89 accord LX
    A20A1 (carbed)
    Slowly dying.... catastrophic ignition failure
    91 Prelude Si
B21A5 MPFI out and apart, coming together.
Just because I use an old distributer cap as an ashtray does NOT make me a redneck!
