turbo on a automatic

ive been toying with this idea when i want to turbo my 87 hatch , i know our trannies arent the best for being automatics , but this car was babyed and im the second owner so i think it can take it. first off i know i gotta do research on the fuel management , only things stopping me now from putting the turbo in is the fuel management and fear of going obd1 and whothout anyone elses help thats done it , having my daily driver off the road for a loong time if i cant get it to work right , also the cars automatic, and school
ive seen some impressive things with turbo automatics ( ie buick t-types and grand nationals) i was wondering if anyone else has info on the diffrence of turboing a automatic vs a manual

the load on the engine is much better because you don't have the time between shifts where the clutch is disengaged. and your power output at the wheels would be lower when compared to a manual with the same set up. but i don't know too much more beyond that.

Having worked in a transmission shop for a few years, and the owner being a race car driver, I can tell you that the auto tranny in the honda wont hold it....the trannys in t-tpes, and stuff like that, are DESIGNED to handle abuse, Hondas are designed to handle driving you to work and back....

i'd have to agree with bglad here... turbo with an automatic transmisison is just asking for your transmission to blow up. I have a general understanding of how an auto tranny works, and that tranny oil would probably heat up to some fairly high temperatures seeing as you are adding much more power to the torque converter.

Be safe and just go with the manual transmission... it's more fun anyway.

lol well maintained auto still bomb at 120k almost routinely... dont bother piping in that your car has 300k and counting, on original auto, cuase im sure it happens, but the fact is, they dont hold up quite as well as manual trannies, (at least in the 3g accord).

if ur gonna spend the money of boosting your car, it wont be worth it to be driving an automatic.

yah i know the 2004r trannys can take the abuse , and i know the honda trannys usually go , my HB has about 130k on it now and ive been driving it for about 10k . this summer i was going to plan on getting another accord and make my hatch manual i was just wondering on how a auto is setup with a turbo , b/c how i think of it theres no boost dropoff

Maybe get an expensive rebuild by a racing tranny shop... I know Level10 does work, I forgot where the list was of the other transmissions shops.

well i've said it once and i'l say it again, Any Automatic honda tranny is as strong as any Ford escort tranny, Honda's biggest weakness is there autos, it dont matter if its an 83 accord or 2006 accord,the automatic is the weakest link.
