    Re: Polished Valve cover

I am also probably going to need to do that soon... the paint or w/e kind of coating it is, is finally starting to give way after 250k miles. I'm not so sure about polishing it.... i'd do that if i was setting up my car for show, but i'm just going to go for the new stock look.

props on the hard work there, looks great.

its one of those things that are hard to give directions to, they tend to very from person to person. like they say, there is more than one way to skin a cat. its one of those things you kind of have to practice and get a feel for. i have found that my skills have improved over time.

you basicly just want to sand the casting texture smooth so you have no pits or imperfections. most people start with 400 grit sand paper. then you work with a finer grit sand paper smoothing the lines from the previous grit. to figure out when you move on to a finer grit, you just use your better judgment. most people go up to 1000 grit before switching to metal polish for the mirror reflection. the more you buff, the greater the reflection. later.

For all that work, you could have just had it "chrome powdercoated" and not worry about corrosion and such.
    Looks good though

    Re: Polished Valve cover

well, imo, i'd say polished aluminium looks nicer to me than powder coat of chrome. its more of a silvery color. i was thinking of getting that done to mine though. but i just decided to polish it out.

I started polishing mine but there were so many pits in the casting that i would have been sanding for months. I just decided to paint it instead.

    Re: Polished Valve cover

sand it down with some 400 grit, then some 800 grit. thats what i did. possibly cut it smoother with a final sand of 1000 grit, then polish. mine was bad.
