I've heard a bunch of different ways, the most common being idling in park, off after sitting, and my method as per my shop manual, right after shutting down a fully warmed up motor.

honda's should be checked cold with the engine off.
i always have to look it up on domestic crap cuz it stupid to me to have to run the thing, go through the gears, make sure its fully hot, and then check.
