How Fast my Accord A20A1 2.0 12V SOHC 2bbl could be?

I have a Honda Accord LX 87, engine code A20A1 2.0 12V SOHC 2bbl Carb, I love this car, this is my very first car, I'm 32, I've had this car for a year now, it still has its original engine, it doesn't have any performance part installed, all parts are original, it is well conserved, she runs sweet.

However, I don't know how good this machine is, I'm new to cars and my knowledge of mechanic is minimum. Since this is my first car, I cannot compare, I would like to know some facts about the performance of this car, How fast is it?, It has a maximum speed of 130 Miles but I hardly ever run it at 70/75 miles top, I'm not into races, but as time goes by I fall in love with my accord and don't know how good this machine is.

I’ve got a neighbor who has a Toyota Corona 1986, it is a diesel machine, stock engine too, no performance parts either. He presumes he can beat me any time with his car, I don’t think so but I want to make sure first, How fast /good my accord is?

Sorry if it seems like a silly question but I speak Spanish all the time, my English is very basic so I have to write straight.

    Any comments my friends.

well, members on this board have said they've topped out on the speedo. so you may be able to do the same, depending on how well your car runs, road conditions, etc. but in a straight race, unless he's geared like a mofo, he can't beat you. diesel engines simply can't rev high enough for speed. and what performance parts you can get ahold of. depends on what you have available to you down there.

You will never reach 130 mph. Just because that's what the speedo reads up to doesn't mean the car goes that fast. The fastest I got mine up to was 105 mph and that was on flat road. These cars are by no means fast as far as top speed or acceleration. Expect 18 second quarter mile times.

with my modified vacuum lines on my carb, i've now been able to get the top end power up. i've reached over 125 mph in mine. unfortunately i didnt watch the speedo too well so i dont know how fast i actually got it. some time i'd like to see if it will pull up to 130, maybe when i'm not racing and trying to watch the road. as for racing the diesel Corona, i think your accord will be a bit quicker than it. i doubt the corona has much more than 80 hp. but i could be wrong.

even in stock trim the carbed accord should be able to get up to 100-110 miles per hour.

about your neighbor's toyota corona, the engine is too small and the car is too heavy. i would say you should have no problem passing him in first or second gear.

Re: How Fast my Accord A20A1 2.0 12V SOHC 2bbl could be?

I'm running a 1988 DX stock minus a flipped lid and I've gotten up to 110mph with more left, noticeably, I felt bad for cruising at 4100rpm so I let off. I just ran it last week for a 2 and a half mile stretch cruising steadily and easily at 100mph, with no problem at all. It ALL depends on the condition of the vehicle and how well it has been treated in its lifetime.

As far as taking that Cornona, I think you'll be able to pull it off. The only serious race I've done was when I first got the car, and I hung and began to pull on a 96 civic lx w/ minor mods. You shouldn't have trouble past 35mph, if it's a launch from stand.

That's got to be the cleanest living DX I've ever seen.

i usually leave my headlights in the up position. i found that putting them down makes a world of difference in how fast i can get the car to top out at. but you probably could have guessed that works.

I don't like driving these cars much above 80. Seems like the transmission should have another gear...even cruising at 75 is uncomfortable with the revs so high. Also, they aren't teh safest cars in the world for high speeds... and I don't mean just crash safety. The suspension, handling, everything about this car wasn't really designed for it to be driven above 100mph. The engineers at honda made this a fantastic little car, and it is fantastic, in the city, and on shorter trips. I love mine. But ... yeah. Maybe race him up to 80 or something. You'll probably win. But going any faster than that is ... just kinda scary.

i have had really no problem at all with high end speeds...
i have a 88 lxi and i can hit 120 easily...though it does slow down around 110, but on straight country roads and the highway you can break 120....
i have a fairly stock engine, short ram intake, and straight piping with oem mufffler, but i have completely rebuilt the engine...
but yeah anyway...shoudn't be to hard to break 110...

I was going to laugh but then I couldn't figure out whether or not you were serious.
Does it really make more than an insubstantial difference?

But it doesn't handle very well at those speeds. It feels nimble and twitchy, not very confidence inspiring.

The registered top speed of an accord LX, or DX is 132 LX-i and SE-i is 134. I've had my LX at just under 130 at about 5600 RPM.

I've done 115 in my almost stock '88 LX. It was at 180K at the time, and honestly, my car actually starts to go very well past 80 or so. After placing the LXi swaybar in, it feels a lot more stable than it did way back when... and I'm sure I could top out the speedo. However, the car I have is in prime shape; I've put 10K on it and the original owner put the previous 175K on it for me, and maintained it immaculately... when I bought the car the engine compartment was so clean I could have eaten off of it.
