Manual Choke Opener

well, i've been thinking about this for a while now. and of course i'm still thinking about it. here's the thing, i have done the vacuum removal on the kehin. during cold starts when the choke is closed it runs like shit to say the least. its being choked too much and since it runs rich, it runs like crap until its opened a bit. makes nice amount of black rich smoke unless i run the engine at a higher rpm and still runs like its flooded somewhat. when i have cold started it and opened the choke by hand it ran fine, didnt have black smoke, and overall just started better. so i've seen the manual choke conversion kits at all the parts stores and they look like i can make it work. anyone done a manual choke conversion? seem like it would make cold starting easier and better on the engine. i might try and use something off my datsun parts car because my orange 280Z doesnt have carbs. its really not a matter if i can get it to work because i'm pretty sure i can. its just i'd like to see if anyone else has successfully done this mod.

I wrote a how to for it somewhere.

Your cable may be shorter then the one I used... if so you may have to route it differently, spending more time making a cable bracket on the carb end then if you had a longer cable.

cool, i had somehow not remembered that thread. but i have seen it before when it was first posted. i'll check the length of the cable that comes in the kit. also, if i can i want to try and just use something off my datsun. i tried to figure out where a choke type looking puller went to on it, but had no luck because i didnt have time. but i may just go back and see. either way i need to find a cable the correct length.

The main issue is securing the cable and making sure you don't bend it too tight or else the choke will become impossible to pull or it'll pull but you'll never be able to push it back the other way.



The A16 had a manual choke if you can find the A16 in another country you might be able to pull their top hat off.

ok, well i've started my manual choke conversion. started last night and didnt have time to finish, so i ended up riggin it up so it would work and took out the choke plate just for now. and wouldnt you know its raining, cold and car's hard to start up with not choke. so perfect timing for our F'ed up weather we always have which is unpredictable. anyway, what i did was modify where the original thermostat coil thing goes attached to the opener and now can use just a cable to oporate the choke opener. just having trouble mounting and getting it to work correctly. i may have to go back and get a longer cable though since it looks like this ones too short. will i need a return spring to keep the choke flap opened or should the cable take care of that? i'm going to check out my spare carb and see what i can easily do about these little problems.

i never had problem with cold start. I removed my choke and the car would start on 3rd turn. yeah it was a bitch to hold the rpm till it warms up, but it was fine after that.

well i have it set up so i can connect it for manual choke opening, but i got fed up with it and just reinstalled the electric unit, setting it so it would open a little faster.

hey, anyone have pictures of a manual choke conversion on your 3gee? cold weather is making my electric choke really anoying because it stays closed longer than it should. i still have the cable run to make mine manual, but i'd like to see what others have done.
