If you're patient, you can score an ECU on eBay for about 10-15 bucks.
I believe it is specific to auto or manual transmission, and I also think, but am not too sure, that the '88 & '89 years use the same ECU. You didn't ask, but the ECU's for the carbed cars are different.
You might take off the drivers door panel and get the window controls and the auto drop relay box (about 3" x3", mine was white).

mine has some kind of ecu, but not anything that really controls the engine. not anymore anyway. i think it just controlled the emission controls in the black box. dont have that crap anymore. 86-87 efi are alike. 88-89 efi are alike. and then pretty much nothing changed on the carbed models. talking about ecu's.
Keep it HONDA. Or at least Asian.™

most likely, if the LXi and SEi ECU's are the same, im sure the LXi hatch would also have the same ECU
ALL fuel injected ecu's (5spd) are the same
ALL fuel injected ecu's (auto) are the same
no matter year, base model, color, door options, interior color
