    Fault in charging stytem?

Last week i was driving on the freeway and my alternator light come on. i thought it was just my battery cause we have had some cold weather here during that week. so i charged my battery all the way and put it back into my car and the light still came on..with the car off the battery is 12v and the car running the battery is 14v.

i was reading on here that the start cause be bad. so i took that off and had it tested and it works 100% they said.

is there any other way so test the alternator without taking it out?

there's a good chance the regulator is bad, or the alternator brushes are bad, it may show 14 volts but it really needs to be load tested, for one thing, test the car at idle with everything electrical on, lights, defroster etc and see what it reads

Do you know if your car has the 3 wire or 4 wire alternator? I had a couple alternators go dead on me in my 84. Once you get used to pulling that driver's side axle, it's not so bad. I can come up and do it for ya in about an hour. I only have about 100 miles left on the break-in on my 81, and I can drive up.

Problem solved it was the alternator.

and i didnt have to take the axle off to get the alternator off it wouldn't fit so i just took the master cylinder off and pulled it from the top.

ty john for coming up and helping me.

    Re: Fault in charging stytem?

Even after you took the bracket off, it still wouldn't come out? FFFFFFUUUUUUU

That's cool you got it out by removing the M/C, sorry that I made you take the long route.

At least she's up and running now. Glad we didn't put that FUBAR alternator in there.
