You can view the timing marks and TDC marks on the flywheel between the transmission and the engine block, (Kinda under the distributor) For automatics the TDC mark for cylinder 1 is kinda of by itslef and has a mark underneath it that looks like a sideways T. The little needle indicator on the block should be "dead on" the tdc mark, which us usually white, unless it's not white like mine ! There should be the word "up", and two timing marks on the cam pulley, The "up" should be up at the top, and the timing marks alligned parallel with the top surface of the head.

I dont think the little hole is at 12 o clock. Im thinking its more like 1 o clock or so. Duddec juts rebuilt his motor hopefully he will chime in or you can PM him about it.

The peep hole is on the housing that the manual transaxle or tranny bolts on too. There is some red mark your supposed to look at. Good luck finding it. I set base timing with 2 the vacuum hoses plugged & timing light hitting the "T".

Look for the "T" on either the flex plate or flywheel to set TDC on #1 piston.

If your going to break the the crank bolt loose, read some other posts I mentioned about some techniques..

    like this?

does it have to be exactly perfect? does it really matter if it was a couple of teeth out?

The "T" is facing to the left when it hits the pointer. I'm not sure what is going on with them diagrams you got there. You can't be a couple teeth off on anything. It has to perfect when you install everything.
Edit- also look at the crankshaft keyway. It should point at 12 O'clock & the camshaft sprocket word "UP" facing 12 O'clock..
