I preformed a search and found that we have a few different posts about different sound dampening materials. I thought I'd price out a few and throw them all together.

There are other types of sound dampening like foam.

The foam would be more of an insulating foam however since it's insulating it's also sound dampening

I have allready bought the B-Quiet Extreme (100sq Ft) it's asphalt based but it seemed to be in the middle to higher end of the asphalt based products :-)

Sound deadening I know is for, well, deadening sound .. vibrations caused by everyday driving down the road - as well as speakers. Especially upgraded speakers in your doors and rear window (coupe/sedan type) etc. however, I was wondering, if I could get away with just doing my trunk ? I mean .. soon as I put my 10" sub in my trunk I don't want it sounding like ass, but I also don't have enough money to strip my interior to lay down sound deadening everywhere .. I only want my sub, 2 upgraded speakers in the rear (6.5's?) and some better door speakers .. i just don't like the vibrating .. can I still get away with sounding good without sound deadening the entire car?

When it comes to a 3g trunk, you only have three things to really worry about. That's the license plate, third brake lamp, and those black metal rods going across the underside of the rear deck. Those are the parts that vibrate the most.

Your plate is easy. You can stuff a cut piece of thin cardboard behind it (temporary tags work well for this) so that it can't shake around, or put a piece of sound deadening materal behind it. For the brake lamp, loosen the side screws and back it away from the glass. You can even sand/cut away a very small amount of the shield around it. You don't want the glare of that light against your glass, but you don't want it touching the glass either.

Those rods under the rear deck will require some little pieces of foam. Just wedge some in between the rear deck metal and those rods and you're golden.

Now, that's all for moderate amounts of power. If you're pushing a wicked insane amount of power, then you'll wind up deadening the entire car.

Oh, almost forgot. Dynamat makes a spray version of their sound deadener. Works rather well. Makes deadening those little crevices a LOT easier.

Ill raise my hand for B-quiet. Had 2 accords now, and both of them got this product. Much better. Did the whole trunk and my spl went up 4dbs. Not much overall loudness, but all the vibrations are mostly gone.... That brake light still shakes on low hz.

the spray on rubberized undercoating that you get for a couple bucks a can at auto stores is pretty much the same as those sound deadening product. Mostly mass loading and a little absorbtion because the rubber is flexible. Plus its WAY cheaper.

i plan on using the liquid stuff where i can't use sheet stuff. shooting into doors really helps, as long as you keep your drains open.

i'll probably use second skin for the sheet stuff, and just cheap bedliner for the spray.

As Sabs5150 said If your not pushing much power then the little tricks will help out quite a bit however if I where in your situation knowing that you are also looking to upgrade your midrange speakers I would suggest purchasing the equivalent of a trunk kit of sound dampening material.

Reason being is that sound dampening doesn't just stop rattles right? It's to reduce the total amount of sound in your car. A lower level of sound inside your car means your recently upgraded speakers will sound better both in loudness and in sound quality. If your using a 10" sub you will make the most of those 10" and be much happier with the overall sound of your system.

So if you want the best sound out of your sound system then buy at least a little sound dampening material for the trunk... you won't regret it.

Oh yeah... If your looking for good 6.5 inch speaker sets (BTW: You can also install 6.5's in the front) I would suggest Alpine Type S 6.5 2 way speakers... about $125 for a pair :-)

peel & stick is good for short term use in a cool climate. eventually, it droops back off of the surface because it's not made to stick in such high temps.

I used a few things in my Accord and what a difference they made. All I really dampened was the trunk so far. But I took off all the panels inside the trunk and lined Dynamat behind them, basically on the inside of the rear quarterpanels, on the wheel wells, on the floor and in the spare tire area. Put some great stuff up inside the fenders between the support braces for the trunk and the quarterpanels. I also bought some 3/8 inch MDF and built false floors for my trunk, and on top of them I glued home carpet padding, then glued trunk carpeting onto it. I also carpeted the vinyl padding on the inside of the quarterpanels.

So theres a ton of sound dampening in the trunk. Made the whole cabin quieter really. But most of all, it really brought the bass from the subwoofer to the front of the car. And you don't hear so much outside the car, which is nice so you don't piss everybody off.

wow, nice, i was thinking of starting off just doing my trunk, so thats good to know, i remember when i had my trunk lining and back seat out, there was soo much noise it wasnt even funny.

Wow good find on the spray sound dampening (3M Underseal Rubberized Undercoating) I'm going to invest in a few cans soon I think :-) it's what I've been looking for myself :-)

I hope to reduce my overall interior noise by at least 4 Db... I'm laying every surface with b-quiet and planning on spraying this stuff in a few layers on the inside of the unibody if possible...

I've also been looking for a mild expanding foam but this rubber spray may be what I need instead :-)


*Edit: I found them for just over $8 per can so I picked up 4 to test them out. I'll let you know how well it works :-) (in a few months)*

if you are gonna use the expanding foam, get the kind for window and door jams. the regular stuff expands with a lot more force and might cause trouble.
