    Exclamation Motor Mount Upgrades

does anyone make an upgraded bushing for the dog bone on our car? I happened to be given one for free today. the bushing is so far gone on the motor side that it fell out. but it's free and something to play with. I'm looking into making an upgraded bushing, but was wondering if I could find one first.

I not sure what if any other bushing would fit. Other than making your own polyurthane one.

ON the other hand. I have been thinking about fabing some mounts for one of these.

    edit:
we may also be able to use something like this

    Re: dog bone

I thought about doing that but you need some movement so it doesn't bind, maby weld the big end solid and make the small end flexible. also when you take the bolts out, don't try to take out the welded one. it will come out,but it takes a lot of effort with a long breaker bar. that seems to happen when you are tired, hot and miserable, have knats flying in your face and have been baking in the sun. whoops

    Re: dog bone

i filled all my mounts with 3m window weld, it made a HUGE difference. we did zuphers car too, and only did the dog bone mount, and he said he noticed a better steering feel and less "wind up" before the power hits the road.

so for cheap and easy i would fill the mount first. but solid mounts might end up being better in the long run, i have heard that poly filled mounts do not last all that long.

So How is the ride with all the mounts filled?

I thought about doing the window weld thing but just dont want excessive vibration.

    Re: dog bone

There is a lot of excess vibration. More than I would have expected just from window weld. I mean personally I love it, but it is definetly sort of intense, and as you would expect, it's mostly only bad at idle speed; as soon as the engine gets about like 2000 it feels good and solid. But with my car, and my already rough and unstable idle, its a little crazy... Honestly I think its livable though... I would recomend the process for sure!

Its funny cause when you push/pull on the engine, the tires flex, and thats about it!

well I started working onn something like this today,i need to finish machining the pieces,I saved the hardened insert from the rubber part of the mount,I just mounted it on a bolt and turned off the old rubber. there is another piece that presses into this, then the original piece presses into that. I'm going to keep the small end mount to cut vibration just make the big end solid. that way it still has some travel.

when you did just the dog bone on zuphers car did you notice an increase of noise from the firewall? I made an aluminum insert with the original steel bushing center pressed into it. I left the bushing in the small end to protect from vibration.when I started the car up there was a huge increase of noise from the engine. If I notice an icrease in noise as loud as my car is,it's an increase. I figured out my rear mount is broke, I had to knock the bolt loose from the old dog bone and the entire engine sagged. all the other mounts are new except for the rear. i've had a new one put up for a while, time to put it in. in order to get the bolt back in the dog bone,I had to jack up the transmission from underneath, then put a comealong on the big hole under the mount, then pull the engine forward. once i did that the bolt slid right in.

check your bottom mount too. I noticed a lot of noise with a solid mount in this location also. It also helped alot too

    Re: dog bone

yea it's transmitting sound through the dogbone to the firewall,it does make a big difference though, the motor can still move some but it's not moving around so much. I'm going to go out in a bit and change the rear motor mount, all the other ones including the one under the transmission are pretty new.

    Re: motor mount question.

If you make it out to the meet this summer you will have to check out my filled mounts.

My motor does not move much at all. You can't wiggle it, running/revving the engine doesn't move it. pulling on the motor just flexes the tires and suspension.

Even decent condition stock mounts are pretty sloppy and have a lot of play. Honestly I think the dog bone mount being filled with poly is the largest improvement, that is an easy one to snag at the junk yard, and very very much the easiest mount to fill. Give that a shot and see how you like it. I love mine...

so then how exactly is the best way to fill them with the poly? i can understand in my head how to do the one by the cam gear... but the front and rear? even the dogbone, i just cant see it.

Lay some wax paper or something over one end, and fill it tight with poly!

    Re: motor mount question.

I just took a worthless broken screw driver and pried an opening, and just filled as much urethane as it would hold. It takes a while because the stuff is pretty solid, but if you are patient you can really fill a lot in there. Be prepared that it is very very messy though. I used disposable gloves and put cardboard down, you don't want this shit on your workbenches lol it will never come off. I have jeans with permanent window weld reminders.

On the dogbone mount on the front side I think you can even pop the bushing part way out which makes it easy to get the uerethane deep into the middle of the bushing.

I would use duct tape... Just tape one side, fill it up from the opposite side, like a mold. Let it cure and remove/scrape off the tape and you are gtg. Honestly I would have to take a closer look though at mine to remember which strategy i took with each mount, but it was a pretty straightforward process.

I'm glad this was brought up tonight, I've read post on it before but no one has really gone into details on the subject.
As far as the crap front oil filled mount, just pop a hole and drain the fluid out of it and then fill it? or clean it out first?

Get the bushings from an automatic for the dogbone mount. Makes it easier to fill with window weld.
