Octane

What octane gas does everyone here use? I had been using 87 octane, but last night I filled up with 89, I think that's whats supposed to go in it anyway. I have stock compression, or close to it. I think that is 9.3:1 If you have 10:1 or more you need to use high octane to prevent predetonation, right? Does it make a diff with lower compressions?

I use premium gas (92 i think) but i have/had really advanced timing because my dizzy was stuck in maximum advance, and i didnt know it. my car pings even with 89.

I have actually heard that on really low compression cars (8:1 and less) higher octane can actually decrease power output, but i don't think that really applies to our cars.

Hey Boba, I want to increase my compression, but I really know nothing about the kind of pistons, and the angle their cut at, and the rods, and camshaft mods, I know squat with that stuff. I have seen your site b4, and I know you know alot, could you help me out? I have no idea what is worth changing, what's not.

he is selling 1cr+ pistons so it would raise your pistons to 10.3....they are every cheap at 250 bucks...

If I buy those, I take 'em to a shop and they put them on? Do I have to do anything else? What all changes will I see in my car? Is $250 a good price? I know zip about this stuff.

I've been running 91 octane for a good 6 months now, always from the same gas station. I've noticed that my car is a little more responsive, and mileage wise, I'm gaining 3-4 mpg. It's like $.20 more per gallon...but in the long run, it more than pays for itself in the end. I don't think I'm ever going to run below a 91 octane for my car again. I'm stock carbed btw.

you crazy man....i put 89 in my Dx and it went fast. iput 10 bucks in and i did not notice a diference besides smother reving but it did not last long i had to fill it up in 2 days and when i put 87 it runs for 3 days....i dont have AC and 80% is highway driving at 70mph

do u have 98 octane in the states?

as I said b4 we get 95 as standard in the uk and no lower!

95 OCtane in Europe is a different standard than our US here.

The highest available is 94 Octane from a gas station and in CA its 91 i suppose and here in jersey and along the east cost is 93 is the average max.

Higher octane does not lower ur performance or increase ur performance. Octane is a fuel's resistance to knock / detonate / adiabatic compression. Octane is a rating, not a chemical that adds power so on a stock car, using different grades of fuel aside from 87 would not do anything for perofrmance wise. I ping with 87 octane so i use 89 octane and its only $0.10 more than regular. Reading up on what an Octane actually is, will give you a better understading.

true, it wont make a bigger explosion like NOS will.
However making the mixture detonate when it is supposed to will help.

that statement is true for a stock car, as in unadjusted timing, valve timing, overlap and etc. boost and ignition advance are just the perks of running higher octane as you know
