from being a wannabe flashlight whore, you'll want to give the lumileds a try.

who here thinks he should try a multiple luxeon dome light? i'd like to give that a shot.

looks like someone already has began building lumiled dome lights.

imight pick some up one day and make them for my vehicles if they're considerably cheaper to build.

I'm glad you guys know all this electronic circuit board bullshit LOL. I'd love to have some nice bright LED tail lights and Signal lights, but I have no idea how to make them. Dont even know what the resistor is for? Don't they make LED's that run on 12VDC? Or do you use lower voltage ones and reduce the voltage with a resistor so you have some "reserve" power if the voltage drops due to load or something???

Shit I'm just making all this up I have no clue what I'm talking about now LOL.

    Re: Official L.E.D. making thread

i have a few extra gauge clusters. Im also interestd in leds in the dash lights, a/c controls, headlight dimmer controls basically the entire dash. I can send it out monday if you pm me address and costs. Ill search for pics of what id like to see. If you could also make a kit so i can wire the up under my seats, dash, and other areas so when i turn on my interior dome light the car lights up like its on fire. Id just need sockets and leds, I can do the actual wiring for lengths and such. Mike

The resistor is there to handle the extra current, without it the LED would not last very long. The 12v LED's you see sold in stores already have a resistor inline with them.

I've been working on making my own surface mount and through hole PCB's to make a nice back for inside a clear lense. Once the pcb is etched you can spray paint it with a non conductive reflective paint to make it look much nicer. Here's the howto I've been using:

DUDE good shit bitesize i was like thinking about it, i'm not the only nerd who was thinking about it. I was thinking about 10mm LEDS, cause some of the bimmer i have seen have 10mm leds. but dude sweet don't forgot to use high Wattage resistors, i have seen resistors burn up.

    Re: Official L.E.D. making thread

If I sent you my tails and front flashers, could you make them full out LED's? And have them look like the factory ones look, low light for running and real bright for brakes?

If so, tell me how much so I can guage whether I can do it or not, or if you need any other parts for trade or whatever deal we can work out. I will let you do my lights as an experiment if you want, as long as they work in the end lol. Just figure it up and PM me and we'll go from there....

It would be a little bit down the road, but I imagine I could do it after some homework and practice. If I could get just one tailight sent to me to practice with that would be the best way to start. I have some guage clusters on the way, and I'm working on some other led project non 3g related. I'm gaining a broader knowledge with led's, resistors, currents...etc. Best thing is you will only need 1 resistor per 4 led's.

I will be most likely buying some super bright white lumileds this week, if anyone is interested in turnsignals let me know.

    Re: Official L.E.D. making thread

you're still going to need more than one lumiled. 7 is probably the minimum i'd go with. that makes a turnsignal project very expensive.

    Re: Official L.E.D. making thread

The front turn signals will only need 1 or 2 lumileds. The tails will need quite a few.

it's not so much the number, but the reflector. you'll have to have a decent reflector if you're only using a single LED.

7 would give you a hexagon shape.

you may also want to consider something like these. they're made with what you're pursuing in mind. http://www.lumileds.com/products/line.cfm?lineId=5

To help diffuse the light more on the regular leds, you can take some sand paper and scuff up the tip so the light is refracted at different angles, which will make the light not so focused in one spot.

Here are some awesome LED tail lights someone posted on a local forum.

By looking at those pictures, I don't think I'll attempt to make them for any one else but my personal own car. That would take forever to make. I'll plan on working on the cluster for now.

A/C and guage clusters will be fairly decent to convert.
