    Exhaust Crackle Pop Backfire

My exaust tends to make a crackle type noise when it is going from higher revs to neutral (so pretty much from high revs down to lower ones) Anyone know what I am talking about or has experianced the same noise/ situation? I was wondering what causes it and how it can be stopped? It is pretty low toned, and is almost like an interuption in the exaust, kinda like it is barking. Any suggestions?

its the design of the engine and the noise the exhaust makes... if you put your cat back on this will stop

    Hey Trav,

I have already put the high flow cat back on a few months ago. It supressed the sound, but didn't get totally rid of it...thats why I am confused.

    Hey Mike,

Do you have any of the symptoms with your exaust that I described in my first post? I am curious to know if it is just a normal thing for a higher flow exaust system.

It crackles when downshifting? Yeah I had that before I had the headers and straight pipe. I think it's normal with a exhaust system like we have.

I was thinking that with the stock set up the crackling wasn't as noticable. With the louder and higher flow it is much more audiable. I was just guessing though.

I think it has to do with the throttle position and exhaust velocity (or engine RPM?).
Basicly you have more exhaust velocity (RPM?) then throttle... so the exhaust (Pistons?) tries to pull in more air but it can't... Somehow between not getting enough air coming in thru the intake but having the demand for more air coupled with the exhuast maybe not getting enough of a gas charge or having empty cylinders, the system tries to equalize the pressure difference? then snap, crackle, pop!

    Engine Braking

Engine braking is throwing the car into a lower gear and not putting on the gas... so basily your revs shoot up but your throttle plate is closed... so you get the pumping effect of the cylinders but not enough air is coming in from the intake cause it's closed... so the exhaust reacts to the pressure difference and may pop or backfire or do other odd things.

The pumping effect will sometimes pull out unburnt fuel because of a rich mixture due to the throttle being closed into the exhaust where it might be ignited. Ignition and valve timing will sometimes cause backfires as well.

Sometimes the exhaust pop is from a leak somewhere.. you may want to check for that.
But usually you'll get it all the time, not only when decelerating.

Decelerate while in gear... or just decelerate slower.
    I really have no idea.

    Re: back fire question.

mine does this very badly, but i replaced those air bleed thingies in the air cleaner (i think thats what its called) and it went away, i was happy, but then i blocked that hose (the 1 that goes into the orange compressor thingy(?) well when i plugged that, all the shaking in the car engine and exhaust popping and pressure was all good and no smoke at all, i was like "holy shit, a vacuum leak can cause a car to do that?!?!?!?!?!?"

    Re: back fire question.

a lot of things can cause that. I have that on my car, it is very mild one but i can tell. my header is not sealed right at the cylinder head, the fresh air gets mixed up with unburned fuel and boom another little ignition.
also, check your distributor, make sure it is adjusted properly.

mine does it when I down shift or let off the gas, it gargles then boom boom boom like you said. It does it the most at around 2800 in third, if I can hold it there, let off just a bit it will do a lot of really quick booms then......BANG haha I love it tho and it shoots flames some times
