OK, if anyone has read a few of my posts, I have been having choke pull-off issues. The car starts great, but soon after idles like crap. Black smoke, misfire, plugs black from running rich etc. basically my vacuum pull-off was bad and not holding vacuum. I tested it in the car by removing the 2 vac lines that run to it, and applying vacuum. It didn't even budge. i went to the junkyard yesterday to look for a new one. The carbed accord that was there had a bad one also. i suspect it's pretty common. I was looking around cursing not wanting to pay $60- $90 for a new one at the dealer when I noticed an older 83-84 Civic. I took a look and amazingly, the carbs are nearly identical! i tested the vac pull-off and it worked. I pulled it out and installed it in my car and by golly it works!
Anyway, point of this thread is to inform others there is an easy, "temporary" fix for any vacuum diaphragm that is leaking. I took my old one apart to find a HUGE tear in the diaphragm. I decided to try something based on what my father recommended from the start. I got a tube of black RTV and smeared it all over the diaphragm. i made sure to coat the tear very well. I did both sides, reassembled it, and let it dry. This morning, i tested it. I have had it under vacuum now for 2 hours with NO leakdown at all. Seems the RTV worked! so, I am saving the old one in case the new one goes as well and I can reinstall it. i don't know about you, but a $5 tube of RTV is a cheaper and easier fix than a $90 vac pull-off!

so which hose is the vacuum pull-off? im still a bit of a noob to this whole carb thing lol.. those problems sound similar to mine

Ok, there are 2 hoses to the vac pull- off (VPO). Remove your airbox and the VPO is on the passenger side front of the carb. It has a little arm that goes to the choke linkage. remove the 2 lines and apply vacuum to the port closest to the passenger compartment. (easy way is use a piece of clean vac line and use your mouth to apply vacuum) if it doesn't move, or moves very little, your VPO has a leak. It has 2 screws holding it onto the carb. remove the 2 screws (lower one is a pain, I removed the top one and moved the whole VPO to crack the lower loose) and pop the arm off the linkage with a screwdriver. There are 3 screws on the face of the VPO. once you remove these, you can take the diapragm out. It is attatched to the arm. It might be stuck pretty good in there, mine was.. There is a spring inside, carefull it doesn't go flying. Once removedlook for any holes or tears in the rubber. Coat it all up with some rtv and reassemble. make sure you set the arm in the right place so it lines up when you reintall it. I'll post some pics of the VPO in a few.

o lol, yeah thats the part of mine that was also ripped, had a pretty big rip in it too, i just took it off my other car, but it didnt make much difference. i just wired the slow-mixture cut-off valve solenoid or w/e its called to the coil, and ran like a dream, just the problems kinda came back again just not as bad

Yeah, that is exactly what I was talking about. Use some RTV on it!

yeah, exactly what i did but as the only carbed 3 gee in the Jy had a bad one too, I figured i'd give it a try. i have the Civic one on there now and it works fine, but a spare never hurt!

I replaced the choke pull of on my carb as well. It only costs about 40 bucks from Majestic Honda. I've also used the RTV method as a temporary fix. My $.02
