Check it when the engine is cold (or at least sat for a little while), and car on a level surface. That way everything has time to drip back down from the upper parts of the engine into the oilpan.

I always checked while hot... but not while engine is running... I guess it's because I want there to be the proper oil level during engine operation. just check it 3 times making sure you whipe the dip stick good...

it doesn't really matter. (if you want to be exact, I GUESS you would check it cold, however the manufacturer doesn't imply/specify cold or hot)
