Installed a H22A dc sports header, pics

I mutalized my brand new header and mounted it on the B20A.
To make the header itself fit, I had to cut off the flange for the downpipe, turn it 180 degrees (to clear the engine block) with a slight angle change and weld it back on. The studholes was grinded to match and I ported the 2 center runners by adding metal inside one side of the runner and grinding some away on the other side. I think the 2 center ports are offset by about 2mm between H22A and B20A so it's no big deal to portmatch.
The downpipe needed to get it's angle changed by quite alot to be able to mount it and needed to get rerouted to clear the steering rack. And I of course also turned the flange 180 degrees.
I welded a complete new stainless exhaust, with straight through silencer and magnaflow muffler, but I'm considering replacing those because that shit is loud as hell when below 4000rpm. Would get very annoying when cruising...

Some misc. pics (of course I forgot to take one of the engine bay with the header, will prob. get around to it soon):

why did you use H22, you know you can use B series header. it will bolt up, just need to change the downpipe a little.

No the B20A5 ones will fit with a little modification, but I felt like getting a DC header, and to get one of those for a B20A5 it will run you around $300-350 for a used one since they are out of production. I think I paid $240 for the H22 one and since I was going to mod the downpipe for 2.5" anyway it didnt matter much.

Nice work!!!! It's nice to see someone as dedicated as me to his car :D

There are more mods to do to this header if you compare it to a B20A5 but like you said, they are out of production :(

P.S. I need to get a stainless exhaust sooooooooooooooo bad!

Re: Installed a H22A dc sports header, pics

    eggcellant work
I had a concern while working on my exhaust, on the subject of chopping up headers. When your welding the pipes together, the back side of the weld that you cannot access , in a perfect world, should be grinded down and dressed off to prevent any (you pick) (static, sound wave, pulsed, sonar tuned**) backpressure that these four cylinders could be subject to. I am sort of refering to a How to or otherwise explanation on backpressure and how to design the best practice situation on lengths and diameters of pipe .etc..
When putting these pieces together I will guess that having one quarter size up OD sleeves at some unions to prevent that from occuring. I wound up with , about six welded unions including the resonator tip. And now I wonder just how much harm in flow that could create, some are butt welds like on your header conversion.
** can not think of the word used in the explanation

I dont think you need to worry too much about the backside of the weld as long as your past the header itself. The backside of the weld is usually pretty clean as is.
If you want it closer to perfect, you'll need to get it TIG welded.
Slip over joints are nice for mufflers and such but less practical to apply everywhere and honestly I think welding it together will create less disturbance on the backside anyway unless you're a shitty welder.

Re: Installed a H22A dc sports header, pics

I hope your right, I did have to cut the flange on the underside (two 12mm nuts) off the original, and cut the header a littleshort because I bought it used, and had to fit it to flex pipe instead of ball joint type flex. About 14 inches from there cat it goes into a smithys muffler, a striat thru muff glasspack with disc baffle, in the output end, then its factory pipes to the back with only a apperance style with small baffle resonator tip, it does not sound or look like any other car Ive heard, its pretty quiet,I have the tip up at an angle sort of, bug style... but it will rasp a little during torque bands. It always sounds like a quiet bug style header set up, sort of. I just think it was too many unions and maybe the muff may be too close to header, Maybe its nothing to worry about though, or I should used 2.5 inch pipe, maybe someday, Right now I am convinced that the kind of power, sound and effeciency s in the civic, mini me set up. But I still keep the 3G, do a bottom end rebuild next year. Im intrigued by the fwd dirt track scene and a sure bet would be a sohc vtec. sorry for long story...

    Thanks.

Btw. I was a bit dissapointed of how poor finish the DC sports headers have on the inside. Didnt look any better than my old Pacesetter for the A20.

There arent any topview pics twoloudnproud... Yet.

    Thanks guys.

Tips? Hmm idk, take out your engine and get some engine degreaser and start scrubbing the bay and engine. Not much magic to it really.
