    Question Is my Transmission Toast??

Did a search, did not really find my answer. 87 lxi auto trany slips only when cold in every gear (have to ease up on the gas so it will engage into gear), when its warmed up its fine and shows no sign of trouble (downshifts fine, etc). Is their an adjustment that could be made, or is it on its way to becoming toast? I did notice sometimes when you put it in park or nuetral it makes a slight grind sound. Should I spend the $$ to have the tranny fluid changed? Its level seems to be fine. Any opinions will be greatly appreciated!!!

Hope it isn't the same problem-my 87 was doing the same, then started slipping at the high end. I bought a year or so with Lucas additive, then had a rebuild. It turned out to be a cracked clutch drum. There are no adjustments, other than the throttle cable, that I am aware of. Good luck.

Yeah, I kinda figuered. Bah! The rest of the car is fine, so I will do what it takes to keep it running. How much for a rebuild ya think??

maybe like 1000 bucks...depends to who you go...or like 150 from a junkyard...get a 5 speed tranny swap if you want..they last longer with good care.

Hmmm, I don't have the tools nor space to do the 5 speed swap, let alone the know how. Looks like it will be a junkyard tranny cause I dont see spending 1k right now. Perhaps I'll try some tranny addititve to prolong it for a while. Damn automatics!!!! Maybe I'll buy a 2nd 3gee 5speed, plenty around here for same price to rebuild. I just love the 3g's!

well, have you checked the oil level?
how does it look, is it dark or dark red color?
May be you just need oil flush.

PS. lucas oil additive kills honda auto trannies. Best thing to use is OEM honda ATF.

Fluid level is correct, its darker red, but not burnt looking. I've only had this car a week and a half so who knows what the prev owners have done to this tranny or what fluids were used in the past 20 yrs! I can't get over how old it is and that its still in great condition!.....except for the trans of course, 167k on the clock.

I say you pull the shop manual up. Do a tranny flush yourself and change all the filters.

Who's Adam? I may need it if he got it. Will have to find someone to install it, cause I have no tools nor the room to do it. Besides I'm a jabronie mechanic and wouldn't trust myself to do the job right. Where do you know of the $500 rebuild?? This tranny will hopefully last a little while longer until I get some $$$ rolling in.....

Hmmm, would rather keep this one an auto as I have plans on buying another 3gee Accord or Prelude in the future w/5 speed. Swapping the 5speed is kinda temping me now though.......
