    stuck/draging caliper?

other day in ridgecrest the car started making a random screeching sound.. its still doing it randomly going forward but the sound is constant when reversing
i took a video of it
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwQ52d9Tgik
do you think its the caliper draging?
btw the clunking sound is due to a faulty inner cv joint(you can see how fucked up it is XD), and i dont think its the wheel bearing becuase there is no play in the hub

oppions ? i might pop the caliper off tomarrow and check it out.. cant afford to replace it right now tho

and yes its a 91 civic but the front suspension and brakes are basicly the same as the 3gees and i perfer staying on this forum and asking questions here compared to civic forums

That sounds awful, I hear metal on metal almost as if you are on the warning tabs of the brake pads. Does it still make the sound when you are on the brakes? Also that half shaft can't be that expensive. I would get that changed asap.

The rotors look like they need to be turned / replaced..

yeah it sounds like completely shit, the front pad looks new and the rear one looks like it might be shot, the rotors only have 13k miles on them but warped after the first 2k miles since there shitty ass autozone ones that the old owner installed just to sale it lol , they are getting replaced with brembo blanks soon tho,
and yeah the half shaft is pretty cheap gotta get that soon before it snaps and leaves us in the middle of the desert

well if you would hold the camera in one place for more than a half second, someone might be able to see something. looks like a cameraman on meth or something. are you sure it's not the bearings?

well like you said the brake pad is worn down to crap at the back of the rotor so what do you think is making the noise

Sounds like it's wearing on the indicator. Sometimes they are bent further in and will rub on the rotor earlier. Could also be one of the pad shims that fell in towards the rotor. That's happens enough that I won't use them anymore.

That clunking sounds really bad dude. I wouldn't chance driving on it.

once the axle evens out the clunking goes away and does not really effect anything except some vibration around 60mph and goes away at 80mph (put over 3k miles on it since its started) but yeah ill get that changed out as soon i can afford to since its getting worse.

and i wonder if it is one of the shims cause it started after drving on a very very very rough road... like 90000 pot holes and thick cracks everywhere..

ill take it apart when i have some room to work on it in the garage

Might be the rotor wobble due to the bearing. Make sure the big nut is tight CAH keep the bearing preloaded. Add grease to the CV shaft with your fingers and run some duct tape around it to keep it held in. And oh yeah get a job and get away from your parents.

    Re: stuck/draging caliper?

I think you just have crappy pads. The screeching sounds like the wear indicators that are probably crappy enough to make a godawful noise instead of something more reasonable. The pitting in the pad surface is probably just poor casting or whatever they do to make brake pads. I'm not sure why the one is worn unevenly, but a good brake job always includes a careful inspection of the guide bolts, so look at those.

Like everyone else has said, the CV joint sounds pretty rude. I probably wouldn't drive on it.

Those are Raybestos pads. I have them in my car without any problems. Sounds like you have something sticking thats why they're dragging.

A grease gun for the brake pads? Regular grease will just burn off. He needs to get caliper grease from the auto parts store.
