    How low can idle be?

To start of, i have a carb. Now my idle right now is a little under 1,000 rpms and around 850 with the lights on. I want my idle to be around 750 with the lights on, so without them on my idle stays at 900. My question is how high does the engine have to idle so the oil pump can build up enough oil pressure so there won't be any problems?

our engines supposed to idle at 750 rpm.
my carbed accord idled at 850 rpm, and it purred like a kitten.
and i set my efi to around 850 to idle.
this way with lights and full electrical load your idle would drop to 750rpm.

I was just asking my brother this, the first line under the 1,000rpm mark would be 750 rpm correct?

Re: How low can idle be?

Thanks Shep. I just adjusted my idle to where it idles almost at 750 with the lights on. Without them on it's about 830rpm.

Re: How low can idle be?

My 3geez's idle is not constant, either. One day, it idles at 900. Next day, it might idle too low at 500.

Nobody seemed to be able to answer the original poster's question about whether low idle is bad for the engine in that oil doesn't get distributed properly.

Well considering the specs under the hood say that with the lights on it should be 750rpm. And automatic in gear should be 730 rpm. My guess would be 700 is the lowest.

I am surprised by my 3geez's, with 200+kmi, ability to idle so smoothly at 500 rpm. I guess it's testament to the TLC put into our 3geez by Honda engineers.

Mine idles smooth at 500rpm's and it has 144,000 miles. Just i don't like it to idle that low.
