    heater core

hey guys, i have an 88 dx hatch, been runnin ok till today i pulled out of an intersection today and hit the gas and whoosh, steam came rollin up my windshield, i instantly looked at the floor and seen coolant dripping onto the carpet, but when i let off the gas the drippage stopped and the steam kindof subsided, never had a chance to look cuz the weather is a bit crazy today but im wondering if it might be a loose hose or i need a new heater core, and how much do they normally go for?

the heater core itself isn't expensive,it's putting it in thats a bitch. in an emergency you can connect the two hoses that go into the firewall together and bypass it until you get it fixed. you just won't have any heat or defrost/defog. there should be plenty of posts on here about removing the dash and every thing you need to know to fix it. oh the haynes book says it comes out from the bottom of the heater box, thats wrong, you have to take out the entire heater box, then the heater core slides out the back side of it. have fun and try to keep in good spirits, also learn some new cuss words, you'll need em. I just replaced mine two years ago,and it just went out again. mine is a son of a bitch to get out,due to a lot of extra wiring and such behind the dash, and custom stuff inside of the car. it took me and my wife three days working about sixteen hours a day to take everything out, replace the heater core, and put everything back in.

yea thats another thing too, started with a choke issue now its some kindoff vacuum issue, its going to 3000 about 5 minutes after warmup and will do that for about 15-20 minutes depending on the weather and its hard on my clutch. It goes away and idles normal but i hate to have to let it warm for a half hour before i go anywhere

i want to delete my heater, could i just use this bypass method permanently?! is this how it goes?

also, could i just block off the 2 ends, or does it have to flow from 1 end to the other? i just find the hose is ugly thats all
