sweeet! and holly dam vacuum lines!!!
AlrightI'm picking the car up monday... its got GOBS of vac leaks, a stuck choke, and its sat for the last *4* months in the impound yard there... I have to drive it 50 miles home, and HOPE it makes it
Getting it for around $250
I'm a 3G Civic/1G CRX guy, I've owned an 84 CRX DX 1.5l Carb, and an 86 CRX Si 1.5l PGMFI (EW1 and EW4 respectivly)
The DX... I miss
My current ride!
Alrightwith that out of the way...
What do I need to know about this thang? Its an auto 82 Accord, has A/C and "HONDA" factory rear speakers?
Man I love old Hondas!

anything I should be worried about on this model/year thats a known issue?
I just gonna clean it all up, do the usual tune up items (plugs, wires, rotor, cap, brakes, fluids, filters, belts) after I get it up here
Are there any late model seats with more lateral support that easily slip in?
What kind of MPG should I be able to get?
No need to explain why you want that car, it is absolutely fucking sweet! That's why!
There is a HUGE issue you should be worried about. Any time these cars overheat, there is a likely chance the headgasket is blown and the head is warped. I mean HUGE chance. In fact, I would guess that the reason theres all that crud on the radiator is because exhaust has built pressure in the coolant system and blown it out the radiator.
However, I have an excellent solution for you!
I have a cylinder head from a Canadian version of that car! I bought it for my 81, and turns out that from the 80-81 EK1 is DIFFERENT from the 82-83 cylinder head. The Canadian head had no CVCC, and gives your car a good compression bump. Should give you a little juice.
I had mine rebuilt before I even checked the head bolt pattern. But should go great on yours. Let me know if you're interested. I spent $250 getting it all rebuilt.
Check this thread for info:

Don't mean to discourage you, just letting you know what you're likely up against. Good luck with everything, and keep us up to date with your progress!
Oh also your car should get just over 30mpg. My 84 can get between 32-34 if I'm REALLY nice. And if I'm heavy on the gas, usually 28. But the 84 has a different motor. But your results should be about the same.
Yup. I figured it was an impound car you were getting for a song. It's a little rough under the hood, and parts are very hard to come by. That carb. situation is major, unless you are seriously familiar with old school Honda carbs. A matched carb. will probably have to come from the same year, same transmission, same emissions, and maybe even same body style. I would try to rebuild the one in there now. Some parts interchanges will be 76-85, some will be 82-85, and some will be 82-83 only. I would start with a Helm's manual for sure. I would be surprised if that car makes it 50 miles on its own power. I'm not hatin', but these are some picky cars to drive sometimes. And sitting for 4 months in a yard didn't do it any good.
The body looks really nice man! And your 'Rex looks tight as all get out, so you picked some winners. You can get that 82 going if you have some time and knowledge and patience. I would start by towing it home; you WILL warp that head if you drive it. A little birdy told me so. Just take pics. and browse around here because this place has some good info.
I've had it running probably over an hour in two visitsI've even driven it around the lot, let it stand and idle for a LONG time, and I think the thermostat is stuck open, never gets more than 1/3rd of the way up the gauge. The radiator was half dry when I found it, but I filled it first time I was there (car was not inpounded due to breakdown tow... registration issue was in, NOT registered) and there is nothing visable from the exhaust, no steam, smoke, ect... The oil is BLACK, which isnt exactly good, but its not cream or milky which IS good
and its to level as well, which is good...
I'd like to have the car road worthy soon, but, aye, it looks like I'll be fiddling with carbswhat fun! I got serious about the car when I started commuting 100 miles every day. My GTI gets 33mpg with my HEAVY foot, my DX got over 45 mpg easily, I was hoping this would get at least 35! :P
I love old Hondas, I've owned *3* 84-87 CRX's and WANT... badlyevery old school honda I see, and I want to see it RESTORED
so I thought, hey, old school Honda, its clean, I need a bop around car...
I dont have much of a choice other than to drive the car up here, I'll be going FLAT broke getting it, $250+ just on getting it, sales tax, registration, $95 in back fees at the DMV, a full tank of gas... I have $426 for the next week, its GONE monday :P Being an 18 year old student working minimum wage and commuting SUCKS I'll tell ya!
Anyways...
How about the suspention components?do the bushings and links hold up well and stay tight on these Accords? I know I'll probably be getting some KYB's for a smooth ride, and likely stock ride height
since its economical, and I love the stock wheels! They're so... Honda

Yeah man that CRX is pretty sweet lookin. Buddy and I picked up an 84 for $80 a few months ago. He's been a little slow getting it going, but it's almost ready to go. He's doing the job right, so his tight budget is slowing it up a bit.
Here's the thread: https://www.3geez.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58062
Sounds like you might be able to get that carb going though. If you know your old Hondas as well as it seems, so you'll probably be good to go with this car. Glad to hear it's not overheating though. The temp gauge in my car NEVER gets up there. It did when I was driving around in Phoenix. But it was like 115 out with the A/C on, so yeah it got up to about 1/2 of the gauge. I wouldn't worry about it. That was even with a new t-stat, and a fresh coolant flush.
As far as the bushings go, they seem to be great. I put Koni's all around in my car, and the original bushings didn't look to be so much as even slightly worn. My swaybar endlinks are in good shape too... Honda does a good job keeping parts protected so they don't wear...
Anyways... sorry to thread jack. Glad to see a new 2g owner who knows thier stuff! And based on your CRX, you know how to do things right.
I agree 100% with 2ndgenguy, as I do most times... We geta few 18 yeard olds on here who buy an old Honda and say that it "needs a litle work", but they want to put in a system first, some LED's, and other non driveability stuff. Meanwhile, the car overheats and spews oil everywhere and it's unsafe. But, they want the rims FIRST and the reliability stuff LAST. Sounds like you know the dealio and what you want to do first and what is priority. Get the damn thing running right and safe. Props if you're only 18 and into the old Hondas and their joyous carbs. However, I have had issues on the 3rd and 4th gen Accords and the front end bushings wearing out. Not a huge deal and I don't think my 1st and 2nd gen Accords have had any issues--yet-- with the bushings. Anyway, keep us updated because the 82 and 83 Accords seem really rare around here. A few 81's and quite a few 84 and 85's. Mostly sedans, too...
That car looks like a good project!
Looks as though its been looked after up until perhaps, its last owner? & now its found you so things should be good again!
How clean is that bodywork?!!
Not familiar with that carb, but if you've had it up & running it can't be all that bad. Got to question your sanity about driving it home but I did exactly the same in an Accord I bought a few years ago that had been lying in a garage yard for over a year! Drove the 185 miles like a dream.
Good luck with it.
That car looks clean!
Good luck with the carb.
Alright reply time before I get my tools and whatnot together for tomorrow...
As a 1982 model year, isnt the sub frame (which I cant swap?) not correct for an easy swap in that way? I have to pass wonderful California emmisions as well sadly, or else my DX would have got a webber as an excuse to get rid of the all the vac lineslooks like a good a20 manual candidate with a weber carb set up.....it should make it a good 15-16 sec car.

For some seriously AWESOME people with that CRX get on over to http://redpepperracing.com friendly, down to earth people that want to see those cars clean, restored, and with NO F-ING lambo doors and wings!!
Also, thanks for the temp info, and clean ride! I'd love Koni's or Tokiko's for a sporty ride, but I'd be breaking the bank!Good to hear about the bushings as well. Thanks for the comments, I like clean, simple cars that you can be proud of
offthahook
Indeed, I hate that...
There is NO need for 25lb 17in wheels that carv a ridge in your fenders and you need to take out a heafty loan to wrap in ANY rubber. The way to go is 13in, lighter the better, unsprung weight is the enemy, wheels just shy of 9lb are niceLike Civic VX wheels! 9.2lb and you can grab em for around $200, while it only takes about that much to put four new tires on em! And I can appreciate a nice sterio, but a gazillion watts with "SUB WOOFERZ" is a bit much I think
There is at least one other hatch, JUST like the one I'm picking up around town here, and a few sedans of indistinguishable years running around too, a fine looking black hatch example that is likely a later year as well. I didnt start seeing them till I started looking, but it happens like that doenst it?
denhonda
The body is GREAT the paint is glossy, and it'll get the Zymol and 3M treatment ASAP. Almost no dents, very complete, nice and in line
Yes, I'm crazy
For fun, here are a few pictures of more Hondas, the 06 CRXPO I drove quite a few hours to get too...

You're correct, your car is not really a candidate for the "bolt-in" A20 swap. Guyhatesmycar (a member here) is currently doing a swap anyways. He's got some innovative fabrication, and he's doing a full "frame up" restoration. Look up "The Welding Thread".
Also, check ClassicGarage.com. You will be AMAZED at how cheap a set of Koni's are. I paid $50 for a complete set that I snagged off eBay for mine.
There's someone on eBay who occasionally posts a set or two as well... I don't have his info anymore, but keep your eyes peeled.
For you sir, Classic Garage has a set of Koni's for $70.
http://www.classicgarage.com/accord1.html
If you want externally adjustable shocks (i.e. Koni Yellows) you can ship them to Koni, and they'll rebuild them for $100 a pop. So it's kinda expensive to do, but if you're desiring the upgrade, it can be done.
Keep us posted! Looking forward to seeing your progress!

I rebuild the carb 2x in one summer and never got the thing to run right. Remans are down right ridiculously expensive too. But if you want to pass emissions and keep the cvcc economy then you need the stock carb and the vacuum nightmare. It looks to be in decent shape, but check the frame in the back pass side near where the radius rod mounts. I've never seen a 2g that didn't have rot there.

Well, I got it home
Its an EK1 (?) 1.8l with a 5spd auto
Is it just me or is this combination EVIL :P It takes I think around 20-25 seconds to reach 60mph. I was able to get a MAXIMUM of 65mph up hill with the pedal at the floor, I think I hit the edge of the flat ground speed around 71-73 mph. There is no way the 3300lbs car is going to move at all swift with this combo, EVAR eh? They were not kidding with that 80mph speedo they put in there...
Handling
I'm sure with a decent setup these cars can be nice, this one though...
The corner speed limit signs actualy apply... 45mph means 50mph will feel like taking the corner at warp speed nine!
The car looks nice, its runs decently smooth it seems, but its the equivilant to driving a big ass buick with a four cyl
I'm a little disheartned after driving it home, I wasnt expecting a lot (like it making it home :P) but what I got wasnt even... well, it wasnt even satisfying in most any way almost.
I've already got some of the vac leaks plugged, and a tune up done for the most part, but it didnt help almost at all, even though the plugs that were in it were so far gone they should be used as EXAMPLES of why you NEED to change plugs...
Words of encuragment...?

Yeah, I got some... Not sure of the EV1 strand. I thought it was EK1. In any case, you have a solid old school Honda that is very rare. A 3 door, no rust, an automatic (which is rare, but maybe not good), and some skill to improve it a lot. Some Honda ATF may make it smoother, but these automatics are really slow. 0-60 in a day is pretty good. I feel ya on the uphill acceleration; I have the same issue and haven't figured a solution other than the fact that I am in an early 80's Accord. I know you can get past 75 miles an hour. I think my little 81 Accord has hit about 85 MPH. It was running hard, but it can get there and so can yours.
With this old of a car, you have to drop the bar and use it pretty much away from busy traffic areas. Like a nice car to just cruise when you aren't in a hurry. BY the looks of it, I can't believe it actually started up. Personally, I think 1986 is the first year you can really measure Honda's engine "prowress". The older 5 speeds do okay, but your automatic and mine will always be horribly slow. I'm good with it because I just think it's tight to own one that is all stock and looks nice. I guess it's like the kid in 4th grade who has to wear the football helmet during school... who makes some progress. Probably not up with his peers by any stretch, but gives it a shot and gets appreciated. Stick with it man; it is a solid car which is super rare to begin with.
And pick this up:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...8947471&rd=1,1
Also, it's a 3 or 4 speed auto. Definitely not a 5 speed auto, but I forget if it has 3 or 4 gears.

As usual, I agree with offthahook. Though, the handling shouldn't be all that bad in the car. Maybe something's up with the suspension. Also, what kind of tires does it have on it? That's huge factor.
Also, the car doesn't weigh anythig NEAR 3300lbs. My 84 sedan is 2275lbs. Since my 81 hatch is 2000lbs, I'm going to guess that your car is somewhere in the middle, like around 2100-2200lbs. Thats where the real beauty of these cars is. They are light as hell. They definitely put new cars to shame. Even some "light weight" sports cars have a few hundred pounds on these old Hondas. That's the trick to em.
And yeah, definitely not a 5-speed auto. If anything, it's a 4 speed with locking torque converter. I think though that even Honda's 4-speed automatic in the 84-85 was a 3 speed with locking torque converter. I'd guess that.
Also, while that transmission "feels" pretty slow, it's not really much worse than the 5-speed manuals. The deal is with the taller gears. It takes longer to climb RPMs, but in reality it's barely slower.
I drove my buddy's beautiful automatic 84LX sedan. Thing was in tip top shape, and it did as well as my car does. You might need some more tuning up, and a little work to really get it to do what it can... My car is even dissapointingly slow, but I still love the crap out of it.
i miss mine lock this thread so i wont be temted to read it lol
1988 Honda Accord LX-i Coupe 123k miles.
The autobox looks to be a 3 speed & it'll probably have lock up on 3rd gear. My 84-85 has a 4 speed box with lock up on 4th.
Regards performance, my '82 1.6 sedan (old 3spd Hondamatic) in its day could manage 0-60 in well less than 20 seconds & could get just over an indicated 100mph in favourable conditions. It could probably manage it now (if it was working anyway) but doesn't get driven hard anymore. Changing the original ignition leads recently gave noticeable extra performance. Handling is awful but the original shockers are really tired - I got a $50 dollar set of Konis off ebay from some guy in San Fran. In limbo till I sort out springs. If you want to retain the original style wheels, you can upgrade the tyres I believe to 185/70's, the same as whats on 84-87 Preludes. You might need to get 84-85 wheels though - not too sure if there the same width or not?
Don't give up just yet.
