    db9 to usb adapter

    ok i just got my megasquirt and the only way to get a db9 serial to usb cable is to order one so can anyone tell me how to make one and save $30???

    umm they shouldnt be $30, and the materials involved in making one will probably run you even more. especially since you will probably need special crimping tools.

    im pretty sure it's not something where you just attach one cable to the other.. there's some circuitry or something involved and thus it's not gonna be cheaper even if you have extra serial and usb cables laying around

    Yeah you're going to have to learn some low-level programming and flash your own microcontroller, or buy a generic USB -> serial controller chip and custom solder it all to a PCB. You can't just adapt the cable. You should be able to buy an adapter for $10-20

    Normal serial (RS-232) and USB are not compatible without some extra circuitry. You need a purpose made adapter.
